Barry Marple

Barry Marple joined the Old Dominion men’s golf program as an Assistant Coach prior to the 2015-16 season and was elevated to Associate Head Coach in May 2023. He enters his ninth season with the team in 2023-24. A double Monarch, Marple joined head coach Murray Rudisill’s staff after five seasons as the head golf coach at Landstown High School in Virginia Beach.
 
The Monarchs turned in six Top-10 finishes as a team during the 2022-23 season. ODU started off the year by tying for sixth at the VCU Invitational as Jakob Chicoyne tied for third with a 13-under par 203. The team tied for eighth at the Georgia State Invitational, then capped off its fall season by placing ninth at the team's ODU/OBX Intercollegiate. In the spring, the Monarchs came in eighth at the Advance Golf Partners Collegiate as Jakob Henriksson carded an even 216 to tie for ninth. ODU's best finish was at Cutter Creek Invitational, taking third with a 19-over 883. The team then wrapped up the regular season with a ninth-place finish at the Tunica National Intercollegiate.

In 2021-22, ODU posted five Top-5 finishes as a team. After taking fifth at the VCU Shootout and ODU/OBX Intercollegiate and tying for fifth at the River Run Collegiate, the team came in fourth at the Southern Invitational and third at the Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate. Filip Wetterqvist carded a seven-under par 209 to tie for fifth at the VCU Shootout, Gustav Fransson shot an eight-under 208 to tie for third at the Georgia State Invitational and Jakob Henriksson recorded a seven-over 220 to tie for fourth at the Golden Horseshoe Invitational. At the C-USA Championship, Fransson tied for fifth at two-under 214 and was named to the All-Tournament Team.

The 2020-21 season saw Marple coach a pair of Monarchs in Jakob Henriksson and Carter Morgan to medalist finishes, marking the first time ODU had multiple medalists in the same season since 2009-10. Henriksson became the first Monarch freshman to win an event in five years when he won the Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate. The next week, Morgan surged on the final day of the Golfweek Program Championship to tie for first and share medalist honors. Gustav Fransson placed third at the Conference USA Championship to receive all-tournament team recognition for the second time in his career.
 
In the shortened 2019-20 season, Marple helped guide the Monarchs to six top-10 finishes as a team. Additionally, Carter Morgan earned medalist honors at the VCU Invitational. Marple also coached Gustav Fransson to a team-best 70.56 stroke average, which was 51st in Division I. Fransson received all-conference and all-state recognitions as well. Teammate Chris Ayers also played to a place on the VaSID All-State Team.
 
In 2018-19, the Monarchs recorded a pair of top-five finishes, including a third-place finish at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate and a fourth-place result at the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate.
 
In 2017-18, Marple helped guide ODU to a pair of third-place finishes and a seventh-place finish at the C-USA Championship. Marple also helped coach true freshman standout Gustav Fransson to C-USA All-Freshman Team and All-Tournament Team honors.
 
During the 2016-2017 season, Marple helped coach the Monarchs to four top-five finishes, including a team victory at the Patriot Intercollegiate, shooting 3-under par the final day to come from five strokes behind. At the ODU/OBX Invitational, the team claimed a runner-up finish by shooting a 14-under par score of 130 for nine holes and saw senior David Langley claim the individual title with a final score of 9-under. The team went on to claim another runner-up finish at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate. Nick Rencis was again a standout in the C-USA Championships, where he finished fifth and was named to the C-USA All-Tournament Team.
 
In the 2015-2016 season, Marple helped guide the Monarchs to six top-five finishes, including a third-place finish at the ODU/OBX Invitational, which included David Langley setting a school record by firing a 63 in the first round. ODU also took third at the Firestone Invite which saw Monarch freshman Calvin Greschner earn C-USA Men’s Golfer of the Week after an individual 12th place finish.
 
Marple was key in the development of freshman standout Nick Rencis, who captured the Greenbrier Invitational title in 20106 and was the highest placing Monarch at the C-USA Championships. Also in the spring season, Marple helped veteran Seth Sweet to three top-10 finishes and a C-USA Men's Golfer of the Week award. Marple also helped guide Old Dominion to top-five team finishes at the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular and the ECU Intercollegiate.
 
“We are pleased to have Barry working with the ODU golf team,” Rudisill said. “He brings a lot of experience with his background in playing and teaching golf. As the golf coach at Landstown High School, he has shown that he can take a team and build it into a winner. It will be a pleasure to partner with him at Old Dominion.”
 
Under his tenure at Landstown, the Eagles winning percentage increased from 30 percent to over 90 percent, including five conference and two regional championship appearances. In his final year, the school won its first and only conference championship after an undefeated season, earning Marple the 2014-2015 Coach of the Year Award from the Virginia Beach Coaches Association.
 
As a high school coach, Marple passed his PAT and entered the PGA as an apprentice instructor. He has also served as an assistant professional and a golf course superintendent and spent eight years as a traffic reporter for two local radio stations.
 
Marple is a native of Virginia Beach and has graduated from Old Dominion University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and a Master of Science in Education.
