ODU Men's Golf Completes Play at Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate

PALM DESERT, Calif. – The Old Dominion men's golf team moved up two spots in the standings to finish in 12th place on what was the final day of the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate on Thursday.

The Monarchs found themselves entering the day 14th on the team leaderboard after posting rounds of 299 and 293 on Tuesday and Wednesday. ODU then shot a combined 296 for its final lap around the course at The Classic Club to end up with a 54-hole total of 888 (+24). Cal State Fullerton finished at 16-under par with a tally of 848 to win the team title, Grand Canyon was one stroke behind them and in second place with an 849, and Oral Roberts took third with an 11-under 853.

Individual medalist honors went to Cal State Fullerton's Tegan Andrews, who went 10-under with a score of 206. Grand Canyon's Kling was the runner up with a 208, and Kevin An from Oral Roberts came in third with a 211.

"Certainly not the finish we wanted. But for the first tournament of the season, there were improvements made that will continue to our next event," said ODU Associate Head Coach Barry Marple.

For ODU, Kaijun Ma led the team and finished tied for 38th with a three-round total of 220 (+4). Tied for 78th after opening the tournament with a 77, he charged up the individual standings thanks to a 71 in the second round and a 72 in the third. The Macau, China native tied for third in Par-4 scoring with an average of 3.93 and led ODU with 36 made putts for par.

Jacob Gunther also overcame a poor start and got better with each round. The junior from Stockholm, Sweden hit a 79 in the first round, but followed with a 72 and a 70 to end up tied for 41st at 221 (+5). Jakob Henriksson recorded a 70 for his first day and finished tied for 51st at 222, Jakob Chicoyne tied for 81st with a total of 229, and Kazuki Yamauchi turned in a 230 to tie for 87th.

"Jacob Gunther had an impressive final round and improved every day, and Kaijun Ma had a solid last two rounds as well," added Marple.

The Monarchs will have several weeks to prepare for their next tournament, UNC Greensboro's Dorado Beach Collegiate, which will be held at TPC Dorado Beach in Puerto Rico on Feb. 25-27.
