GREENVILLE, N.C. – Old Dominion men’s golf finished the final round of the ECU Intercollegiate on Tuesday afternoon, placing 12th in the team standings.
The two-day tournament, hosted by the Pirates at Brook Valley Country Club, was scheduled for 36 holes of continuous play on Monday with the final 18 holes to be played on Tuesday. The field couldn’t complete the second round before running out of daylight and resumed play on Day Two.
The Monarchs got better with each round, posting a 23-over par 311 in the opening round, followed by rounds of 306 and 304 for a final tally of 921 (+57). Central Florida led the 16-team field with an 8-over par 872, the host Pirates grabbed second place with a score of 884 (+20), and Connecticut took third place with an 894 (+30).
ECU’s Nathan O’Neal captured individual medalist honors with a five-under par 211, and Auburn’s individual golfer, Reed Lotter, was the runner-up with a one-under 215.
Kaijun Ma was the top finisher for ODU, tying for 16th at five-over 221. The junior opened the tournament with scores of 75 and 74 before carding an even round of 72 for his final lap. Jacob Gunther was next, his total of 13-over 229 tying him for 36th. Philip Minnehan posted an 18-over 234 to tie for 61st and James Page finished 80th with a 22-over 238. Cullen Campbell was at 19-over par with a 163 through two rounds, but withdrew.
“Considering we were a man down, it was a solid effort from our four starters,” said ODU Associate Head Coach Barry Marple. “The guys are a lot more talented than their scores indicate, and we’re looking forward to getting to work for the next event.”
ODU will close out the month at the Cutter Creek Intercollegiate, hosted by ECU on March 28-30 at Cutter Creek Golf Club in Snow Hill, North Carolina.
