KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – Old Dominion men’s golf secured its third-straight Top 10 finish, placing third at the Irish Creek Collegiate on Tuesday. The Monarchs combined for a seven-over par 859 through two days of play at The Club at Irish Creek.
“It was great to be back in contention again and see all the team’s hard work start to pay off, especially that of Jakub Sutor,” said ODU associate head coach Barry Marple. “Coach [Michael] Minnehan and I were quite pleased with what we saw and are excited to build on this for the conference championship in a few weeks.”
Sutor, a sophomore from the Czech Republic, led the Monarchs with a two-under par 211. He started off Monday morning with a round of two-under 69 and followed with a one-over 72 in the afternoon. Suter then shot a final round of 70 to tie for fifth place in the individual standings, his first collegiate Top-5 finish. He recorded five of his 10 birdies in the first round, and in the third round he made an eagle on the par-5 13th hole.
Kaijun Ma was next for ODU, tying for 11th with a one-over 214. He started off the Collegiate with a three-under 68, followed with an even 71 in round two, and turned in a final round of 75.
Joe MacPherson tied for 24th with a five-over 218, Cullen Campbell tied for 33rd at nine-over 222, and Quin Covington and James Page both tied for 39th with a pair of 11-over 224s to round out the scores for Old Dominion.
Catawba won the tournament with a four-over par 856, and the host Mountaineers edged the Monarchs by one stroke to place second at six-over 858. N.C. A&T’s Ignacio Zapata was the individual champion after carding a five-under 208. Catawba’s Paul Esnault was one stroke back of Zapata, earning runner-up honors with a total of 209.
Up next for the Monarchs is the Sun Belt Championship, which will be held on April 27-30 at Annandale Golf Club in Madison, Mississippi.
