Dominik Mueller completed his seventh season at the Monarchs Head Coach in 2022-23, as Coach Mueller led the Monarchs to their fifth appearance in a league championship match over the last seven seasons. He won the 100th match of his ODU career on April 2, 2023 with a 6-1 win over Louisiana.
ODU changed conferences in the 2022-23 season returning to the Sun Belt Conference and the Monarchs made quick noise to be a team to deal with as they captured the league title and NCAA Tournament bid. The Monarchs defeated South Alabama 4-2 in the tournament final and advanced to a regional at North Carolina. On the year, the Monarchs were 18-10 and were ranked third in the Atlantic Region. Individually, Jakob Cadonau was named Sun Belt Conference Newcomer of the Year and Mueller earned Co-Coach of the Year honors. Cosme Rolland De Ravel garnered second team All-Conference honors as well.
The 2021-22 season saw the Monarchs come away with a few postseason awards with Francois Le Tallec earning a bid to the NCAA Singles Championships finishing as the highest ranked player in Conference USA at 50th and earned First Team All-Conference USA honors in singles. The doubles tandems of Nicola Vidal and Luca Maldoner (first team) and Oliver Nolan and Younes Lalami (second team) earned honors as well. Vidal and Maldoner ended the year ranked 90th in doubles.
In 2020-21, Younes Lalami was named the Conference USA Freshman of the Year, while Lalami was joined by teammates Luca Maldoner and Tomislav Podvinski on the All C-USA Singles Second Team. Maldoner/Nicola Vidal garnered All Conference USA Doubles First Team accolades. Additionally, five student-athletes garnered C-USA Honor Roll laurels, while two Monarchs earned Conference USA Commissioner’s Academic Medals.
Before the 2020 spring season was cut short, Mueller’s Monarchs compiled an 11-3 overall record, with an 8-0 mark at home. Coach Mueller had two different double tandems nationally ranked in the ITA’s year-end rankings, while Luca Maldoner was also ranked in singles throughout the season.
During the fall of 2019, Francois Musitelli and Jannik Giesse won the 2019 ITA Atlantic Region Doubles Championship, earning a bid to the Oracle ITA Fall National Championships in Newport Beach, Cali., where Giesse/Musitelli defeated Dartmouth’s No. 9 nationally ranked tandem. Luca Maldoner advanced to the finals of the 2019 ITA Atlantic Region Singles Championship, punching his ticket to the Oracle ITA Fall National Championships. For 2019-20, ODU led C-USA for Athlete of the Month honors in the fall and Athlete of the Week laurels in the spring.
In the spring of 2019, Mueller's Tennis Monarchs were named an ITA All-Academic Team for having a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). Four men’s tennis student-athletes were also awarded ITA Scholar-Athlete status.
Aziz Kijametovic and Francois Musitelli garnered VaSID All-State First Team honors for doubles and All-State Second Team honors for singles. In the year-end ITA singles rankings, Kijametovic cracked the top 100 in the No. 97 spot. In doubles, Kijametovic and Musitelli ended the year as the No. 27 ranked tandem in the land. Kijametovic and Musitelli earned Conference USA’s automatic bid to the 2019 NCAA Doubles Tournament, after being the highest ranked doubles duo in the league. Kijametovic and Musitelli were also named to the All-Conference USA First Team for singles, as well as doubles; while Jannik Giesse was placed on the Second Team for singles.
As a team in 2019, ODU finished the season nationally ranked No. 66 by the ITA. Old Dominion compiled an 8-1 home record.
Mueller was named the 2018 Conference USA Coach of the Year after winning the C-USA Tournament in dominating fashion (won all three matches 4-0). The conference title was the first for the school since 1994. Mueller and the Monarchs earned the school’s second ever bid to the NCAA Tournament, with the first occurring in 2007.
During the 2018 spring season, Mueller’s program climbed as high as No. 25 in the national rankings after taking down No. 14 Dartmouth (4-1) and No. 24 Utah (4-0). Old Dominion entered the NCAA Tournament with a 19-6 overall record and went a perfect 6-0 against C-USA opponents.
The Tennis Monarchs ended the year claiming victory in 13 of their last 15 matches, while outscoring their opponents 57-21 during that stretch. ODU also rode an 11-match win-streak into the NCAA Tourney, in which the Monarchs outscored their opponents 46-12.
Aziz Kijametovic, who earned the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Singles Tournament, was named Conference USA Player of the Year. Vincent Schneider was named Newcomer of the Year and Outstanding Singles Player of the C-USA Championship, as well as Outstanding Doubles Team of the C-USA Championship with teammate Jannik Geisse.
Kijametovic and Adam Moundir garnered Singles First Team All-Conference honors, while Schneider and Francois Musitelli were named to the Second Team. In doubles, Kijametovic and Musitelli earned First Team recognition, while Moundir and Javier Jover Maestre were placed on the Second Team.
In 2017, Mueller’s Monarchs earned a No. 2 seed in the Conference USA Tournament and made it all the way to the Championship match before falling to Rice in heartbreaking fashion, 4-3.
Old Dominion achieved a Top 25 national ranking in February after picking up road wins against ACC foes NC State and Clemson. The Monarchs also picked up four wins over conference champions and had three different five match win streaks. Mueller’s squad never lost back-to-back matches and compiled seven true road wins on the season.
Adam Moundir established himself as one of the best college tennis players in the country, as his list of accomplishments shows: first ODU tennis player to qualify for the NCAA tournament since 2009, claimed season high ranking of No. 18, ranked with two different doubles partners (Javier Maestre and Jacob Nicolussi), named Conference USA Player of the Year for a second consecutive year, named Most Outstanding Singles and Doubles Player (with partner Javier Maestre) at the Conference USA tournament and he was named ITA Player to Watch for the Atlantic region.
Conference USA honored multiple Monarchs for their on-court success, as Moundir and Weindl were named All-Conference Singles First Team, as well as Moundir and Jover Maestre in doubles. Jover Maestre received Second Team honors for singles.
The Monarch Tennis team also succeeded in the classroom with a team GPA over 3.2, the Monarchs were one of the elite ITA All-Academic Teams in the country. Adam Moundir was also honored on the C-USA All-Academic Team.
Old Dominion University and Dr. Wood Selig hired Dominik Mueller as the Monarchs’ men’s tennis head coach on July 29, 2016. Prior to taking the job in Norfolk, Mueller was an assistant coach at Baylor for five seasons.
“The committee was impressed with his body of work as a student-athlete and a coach,” Senior Associate Athletic Director Bruce Stewart stated. “Dominik has been categorized as a “player’s coach” and comes from a winning tradition at Baylor. He has been a proficient recruiter while maintaining a solid reputation for developing student-athletes.”
In 2016, he helped lead the Bears to a final ranking of No. 32. In 2015, Baylor advanced to the NCAA semifinals with a 25-6 mark and finished the year with a final ranking of No. 3. The Bears won the Big 12 regular season and tournament titles in 2014, advancing to the NCAA quarterfinals and finishing with a final ranking of No. 6.
Mueller was a part of four Big 12 regular season championships as a coach and recruited and coached seven All-Americans.
Baylor’s all-time winningest singles player with 96 dual match victories, Mueller was the 2008 Baylor Male Academic Student-Athlete of the Year and was a CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2010.
