NORFOLK, Va. – #56 Old Dominion men’s tennis defeated VCU, 4-1, on Senior Day for the team’s final regular season match.

“This win summarizes our season,” Head Coach Dominik Mueller said. “Didn’t play our best tennis but stayed calm, won some tough first sets after losing doubles and stayed around in the two matches we lost the first sets. Very gutsy win that will prepare us for conference next week.”

ODU’s Thomas Nelson and Adam Majchrzak opened doubles play with a 6-1 victory over Alfred Almasi and Nicolo Consonni on court one. However, VCU’s Mats Bredschnijder and Leon Zaorski tied doubles play after downing Yanis Moundir and Felix Obermair, 6-3, on court three. For the doubles point, Gevorg Mnatsakanyan and Patrik Petera pulled away from Zech Hamrouni and Piet Steveker on court two in a 7-5 win, putting the Rams on the board.

Nelson tied the match after grabbing the first singles victory of the day over Petera (6-3, 6-3) on court six. Teammate Obermair followed suit, besting Bredschnijder, 7-6, 6-1, on court two, before Monarch Hamrouni brought ODU within one point of claiming the match after defeating Almasi (7-5, 6-2) on court four. For the comeback win, Majchrzak downed Mnatsakanyan, 6-5, 7-5, on court one.

No. 3 Steveker’s and No. 5 Aryan Saleh’s matches against Consonni (4-5, 6-5) and Zaorski (2-6, 4-3) were suspended respectively.

"Thanks to our senior class," Mueller added. "What a special class, winning 72 dual matches and three consecutive Conference Championships. They will be missed on and off the court. They have given us everything they had."

Old Dominion will compete in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament this week in Rome, Georgia, from April 16-19. The Monarchs will find out their seeding on Monday, April 13.
