ELON, N.C. – #56 Old Dominion men’s tennis swept Georgia Southern, 4-0, to begin its stretch of away matches on Saturday afternoon.
”Conference wins are always tough to come by,” Head Coach Dominik Mueller said. “We had a bad start in doubles and went down a break on every court. But we settled in and found a way to win that point. Very happy how we took control at the bottom of the line up and finished it.”
No. 1 doubles pair Adam Majchrzak and Thomas Nelson opened the day with a 6-3 victory over Gregoire Delattre and Davis Taylor, though Georgia Southern quickly tied doubles competition after Willy Mirarchi and Matthew Mitchell defeated Yanis Moundir and Felix Obermair, 6-3, on court three. With the doubles point on the line, Zech Hamrouni and Piet Steveker bested Albert Saar and Albert Widell, 6-4, on court two to put ODU on the board.
Aryan Saleh continued to add to Old Dominion’s momentum with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Mitchell on court six to begin singles play. Steveker followed suit, downing Widell on court five by a 6-1, 6-3 score to put the Monarchs one point away from defeating the Eagles. Hamoruni would be the one to claim the last point needed for ODU, besting Taylor 6-1, 7-5 on court four to complete the sweep.
No. 1 Majchrzak’s, No. 2 Olivier de Sardan’s, and No. 3 Obermair’s matches against respective opponents Saar (4-6, 6-0, 2-0), Delattre (3-6, 3-5) and Mirarchi (1-6, 5-6) were suspended.
