WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – #57 Old Dominion men’s tennis swept Gardner-Webb, 4-0, to clinch its first NCAA Tournament win since 2007 and advance to the second round of tournament play on Friday afternoon in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

The last time the Monarchs won a tournament match, current ODU women’s tennis head coach Dominic Manilla was on the team, assisting with a 4-3 victory over Virginia Tech.

“What a milestone for our program,” Head Coach Dominik Mueller said. “Only the second time our program wins an NCAA match and first time during my tenure. And how we did was 100% what we did all season long. The moment didn’t get too big for our guys. Very proud of them and excited to play the defending champions and number one overall seed tomorrow.”

On court one, Thomas Nelson and Jean-Karim Olivier De Sardan began doubles play following a 6-2 victory over Kaua Cressoni and Boyd Schreiber. For the doubles point, Felix Obermair and Zech Hamrouni downed Noah Zeiger and Alexander Bergeron, 6-3, on court three, suspending Adam Majchrzak’s and Piet Steveker’s match against Graham Bourne and Johan Van Wijk on court two, 5-4.

Steveker recorded the first singles win on court three, besting Van Wijk 6-4, 6-0, before teammate Hamrouni downed Bourne, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4), on court five. To clinch ODU’s first NCAA Tournament win since 2007, Majchrzak defeated Bergeron, 6-4, 6-4, on court one.
