Susan Montgomery

Montgomery is responsible for scouting future Lady Monarchs in the southern states as well as continuing the Old Dominion tradition of overseas recruiting. Additionally, she monitors the academic progress of the Lady Monarchs student-athletes. Montgomery handles the development of the Lady Monarch perimeter players and shares scouting responsibilities.

Montgomery joined Wendy Larry's staff in June of 2001 and each season helped the Lady Monarchs capture the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Title and advance to the NCAA Tournament, including 2002's Elite Eight run in the Midwest region. In her four years on the Old Dominion staff, the Lady Monarchs have compiled a 96-33 record and a 65-7 Colonial Athletic Association mark.

Prior to joining the Old Dominion staff, Montgomery spent four years as an assistant at Georgia State aiding the Lady Panther's back-to-back 24 win seasons and the 2001 TAAC title. During the 2001 season, she was a key component in Georgia State's first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament, facing national powerhouse Louisiana Tech in the East Region. During her tenure, she served as the Lady Panther's recruiting coordinator bringing two TAAC All-Newcomers, including the 1999 TAAC Newcomer of the Year, to Atlanta.

Montgomery also served as an assistant coach at the University of South Florida and the head coach at Kennesaw State in Marietta, Georgia for three seasons. At the helm of the Owl program, Kennesaw State compiled a 52-32 record and captured the NAIA District 25 Championship, earning a spot in the NAIA National Tournament in 1993. Before taking over the reigns, Montgomery assisted the late Ron Walker in the school's first-ever post-season tournament. The Owls competed in the NAIA National Tournament finishing 16th in the nation. Once again establishing herself as a recruiter, Montgomery was responsible for signing Kennesaw State's all-time leading scorer.

Before joining the collegiate coaching ranks, Montgomery served as a high school coach in Valdosta, GA, from 1986-91, where she first began her association with Old Dominion. While in Valdosta, two of her players were recruited and played for Old Dominion, Cassandra Twine (1990-92) and the late Esther Benjamin (1993-96).

Montgomery began her coaching career as the head softball and assistant women's basketball coach from 1984-86 at Berrien County in Nashville, GA, the alma mater of former Lady Monarch Shonda DeBerry. She was also co-head coach of the Tifton Stompers, a girls 18-and-under softball team that ranked as high as fifth nationally and participated in the ASA National Softball Tournament in 1986.

During her coaching career Montgomery has been honored with many awards including Coach and Teacher of the Year Awards from the Valdosta City Schools (1988-89), WBCA District 5 Legislative Committee Representative (1994-95), sponsor for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (1993-95), and most recently a representative on the WBCA Scholarship Committee (2002-2004).

Earning both her undergraduate (1983) and master's degree (1989) in health and physical education from Valdosta State, Montgomery, a native of Marietta, GA, currently resides in Buckroe Beach in Hampton, Virginia. She welcomed a daughter, Reese Bailey, in February of 2005.
