NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion women's basketball continues its homestand this Wednesday as the Monarchs host Temple for the Anne Donovan Classic. Tip-off at Chartway Arena is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. EST.
The game is in honor of the late Anne Donovan, a 1988 inductee into the ODU Sports Hall of Fame who led the Lady Monarchs to the 1980 AIAW National Championship and two more final four appearances. ODU's all-time leading scorer, she won two Olympic gold medals as a player and coached Team USA to gold at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China.
Members of Donovan's family will be in attendance Wednesday. Additionally, ODU alums and donors Wally and Linda Haislip will be recognized for establishing the Anne Donovan Women's Basketball Endowed Scholarship.

The Series
Old Dominion and Temple met for the first time last season as the Owls hosted the Monarchs at The Liacouras Center. A 71-68 win for ODU, the Monarchs trailed for most of the first half and struggled offensively but overcame its shooting struggles with 23 offensive rebounds and 22 second-chance points. Iggy Allen and Ajah Wayne both recorded double-doubles: Allen finished with 22 points and a game-high 12 rebounds while Wayne tallied 13 points with 11 boards, two steals and a pair of blocks.
The contest was ODU's final non-conference game of the 2021-22 season as the Monarchs went into league play with a 10-2 record. The victory over the Owls also pushed the team's win streak to eight.

The Monarchs (3-3) got back into the win column on Sunday as ODU defeated Coppin State 70-63 at Chartway Arena. Amari Young paced the Monarchs with 11 points and 13 rebounds while Kaye Clark made 3-of-4 shots from distance and contributed 15 points. ODU used a 14-1 run early in the third quarter and held off the Eagles down the stretch. With the victory, ODU is now 3-0 all-time against Coppin State.
Jordan McLaughlin is averaging 10.8 points and Clark is right behind her with a 10.3 scoring average. Next for ODU is Makayla Dickens with 9.0 points per game and Young follows at 8.7 points per outing. Clark and Dickens have both made a team-high eight three-pointers while McLaughlin has converted 17-of-24 (.708) shots at the free-throw line. On the glass, Young is grabbing 7.5 rebounds per game and Brianna Jackson averages 5.8 boards. McLaughlin is first on the team with 22 assists, Clark owns 21 steals, and Young and Jackson enter Wednesday with five blocks each.
As a team, the Monarchs have a +1.8 scoring margin through their first six games. ODU is shooting .383 (142-for-371) from the field, .290 (27-of-93) from distance, and .558 (72-for-129) at the line. Through games played on Nov. 28, the team ranks 32nd nationally in turnovers forced per game (21.50) and 35th in steals per game (11.5). Clark is currently 13th in the country in steals per game (3.50) and 17th in steals.
About Temple
The Owls (2-4) snapped a three-game losing streak with a 77-62 win at Bucknell on Sunday. Aleah Nelson led both teams with 23 points, Jasha Clinton netted 17 points, and Jalynn Holmes chipped in nine points with seven rebounds. The Cherry and White pushed the lead to 13 early in the third quarter and scored the first seven points to open the fourth quarter.
Temple has four players averaging double figures: Nelson is the top scorer with 16.3 points per game, Clinton is next at 11.0 points, Tiarra East is third at 10.3 and Tarriyonna Gary is right behind her at 10.2. Nelson and Gary are threats on the perimeter with a combined 32 made three-point field goals. East is the top rebounder for the Owls with 6.0 boards per game. Clinton has collected a team-best 10 steals and Ines Piper has recorded four blocks. Nelson ranks 19th in the country in assists per game (5.8) and Gary is 29th in three-point field goal percentage (.484).
The Owls have been outscored by an average of 1.7 points per game. Temple is shooting a combined .399 (147-for-368) from the floor, .350 (43-for-123) from long range, and .707 (58-for-82) at the charity stripe. The team was picked to finish seventh out of 11 teams in the American Athletic Conference (AAC) Preseason Poll, receiving 43 points.
Temple returns six players from a 2021-22 squad that finished 13-15 overall and 8-8 in conference play. That group includes guards Clinton, Makayla Waleed, East, Aniya Gourdine and Holmes and forward Caranda Perea. The Owls have eight newcomers this season. Joining the team are guards Nelson (Towson), Gary (Towson), Kendall Currence (Northeastern) and freshman Kourtney Wilson. The team's new forwards include Piper (Northwest Florida State), Rayne Tucker (Towson), Denise Solis (UMass Lowell) and Brittany Garner (Prairie View A&M).
Head coach Dianne Richardson is in her first year leading the program. She came to Philadelphia after spending the previous five years at Towson. ODU squared off with her Tigers in the opening round of the 2022 WNIT, defeating them 72-66 on March 18 at SECU Arena.

Season tickets represent a savings of more than $50 for men's games and $45 for women's games, over single-game tickets. Single-game tickets for regular season men's and women's basketball games will go on sale later in the month. Single-game ticket prices start at $18 for men's games and $11 for women's games, with special pricing for senior citizens, ODU faculty and staff, youth (12 and younger) and members of the military. ODU students can register for student tickets for free to any ODU men's and women's home game.
