Monarchs Fifth In VaSID All-Sports Championship

NORFOLK, VA-- Old Dominion University athletic teams won .567 percent ofits intercollegiate contests in 2009-10 to place fifth in the 32nd annual Virginia SportsInformation Director's Association Division I All-Sport championship.

The University of Virginia won .693 percent of its intercollegiate athletic contests to win the state crown for the third straight year.

Virginia Commonwealth was second overall at .608 followed by Liberty at .595. Virginia won .757 percent of its men's contests followed by Virginia Tech at .659. ODU was third at .622. On the women's side VCU won .636 percent of it's contests, followed by Virginia at .627.

The Monarch basketball squad won 27 games, captured the CAA regular season andtournament championship and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournamentafter knocking off sixth seeded Notre Dame, 51-50. The Monarchs also defeated 11th ranked Georgetown. Senior Gerald Lee was named CAA Tournament MVPand completed his career at ODU with 1,624 career points. Junior Ben Finney earned third team All-CAA Honors, while Kent Bazemore was named All-Defensive and All-Tournament. Sophomore Trian Iliadis was named to the CAA's All-Academic squad.

The Monarch football squad kicked off its inaugural season with seven home sellouts in the newly renovated Foreman Field at SB Ballard Stadium. ODU ranked fifth nationally in average attendance per game among FCS schools. The Monarchs 9-2 record was the most successful start-up program in NCAAFCS history. Two Monarchs, punter Jonathan Plisco and long snapper Dustin Phillips earned All-American Honors. Quarterback Thomas DeMarco ranked second nationally in rushing yards for a quarterback and Seventh in scoring average while Plisco led the nation in punting.

The wrestling Monarchs won the CAA regular season title and placed second at the CAA Championships. James Nicholson, Jesse Strawn and Chris Brown captured CAA Individual titles and advance to the NCAA Championships with Brown earning All-American honors with an eighth place finish. All three MonarchsRanked in the top 15 nationally in their respective weight classes throughout the year. James Nicholson earned National Academic honors, and was named CAA Scholar Wrestler of the Year.

The Lady Monarchs won 19 games and captured the CAA regular season title. They advanced to the second round of the WNIT. Head coach Wendy Larry earned her eighth conference Coach of the Year Honor while Jasmine Parker, Jessica Canady and Shadasia Green earned All-CAA honors. Mairi Buchan was named to the CAA All-Academic squad.

The Lady Monarch sailors finished third at the ICSA Women's National Championships while the Coed squad placed 14th. In the ICSA singlehanded national championships, Morgan Wilson placed fifth and Katrina Williams took eighth. The Lady Monarchs ranked as high as number one nationally earlier this season. Skipper Stephanie Roble and senior crew Michael Komar were each named ICSA All-Americans.

Junior tennis player Nadine Fahoum compiled a 37-6 overall singles record. She ranked as high at 15th nationally and defeated two top 20 opponents and eight nationally ranked opponents. Fahoum was named the Alumni Associations Female Athlete of the Year and CAA Player of the Year. She also competed in the NCAA Championships in singles and in doubles with teammate Joanna Dobrowolksa.The doubles squad ranked 52nd nationally.

Men's Soccer won 11 games, led by the play of All-American Nane Joseph who led the team with six goals and 15 points. Joseph was also named Alumni Associations Male Co-Athlete of the Year, and was selected in the fourth round of the MLS Super draft by Toronto. Joining Joseph on the All-CAA squad was sophomore keeper Evan Newton freshmen Shane Howard, and Yannick Smith. Steffen Rabben was named recipient of the Jack Wilkins/James Howard Scholar Athlete of the Year while bothRabben and Adam Roscioli were named to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District team.

For the second time in three years, the Lady Monarch field hockey squad led the nation with the best grade point average At 3.52. 13 members of the squad were Dean's list students. Goalkeeper Kelly Driscoll was named to the All-Region team as she led the CAA in saves with 116. In all, Driscoll, Hanna Warren and freshmanJulie Hodge earned All-CAA honors. Warren ranked among the leaders in the CAA with seven assists and four defensive saves.

Men's Tennis was led by Tobias Fanselow, who ran off 14 straight victories to start the Spring. He was named first team All-CAA along with teammate and doubles partner Benjamin Chomette. The doubles team knocked off the nationally ranked team from William and Mary.

The Monarchs swimming and diving squad finished fourth at the CAA Championships as sophomore Arni Arnason captured his second straight CAA 200 breast stroke crown, while Mikael Ramkvist took the 200 back title. Arnason, Ramkvist and 400 IM participant Kevin Latimer earned All-CAA honors.

Lady Monarch swimmer April Barrientos won her second straight CAA 100 backstroke title, while Erla Haraldsdottis finished second in the breast stroke with an ODU record mark of 1:01.32. She also set a record in the 200 IM. Joining Barrientos and Haraldsdottir with All-CAA honors are Agata Nowak and Emma Forbes in the 200 medley and 400 medley relays. Elizaveta Moiseeva was named recipient of the Jack Wilkins/James Howard Scholar Athlete of the Year.

The Monarch Golfers had seven top ten finishes, including titles in the ODU-Seascape and second place finishes at the Joe Agee and Palmas Del Mar tournaments. Senior Eric Onesi was named All-CAA and three times during the year was named CAA Golfer of the week. He finished second at the CAA Championships for the second straight year. Onesi also gave the senior speech at the Athletic Awards banquet.

The Lady Monarch Golfers registered four top ten finishes this season as CAA Rookie of the Year Samantha Morrell led the way. Morrell finished in the top three in three different tournaments. Emma Gilmore, Laura Holmes and Kristen Hagan paced the Lady Monarchs with strong tournament finishes.

Four Lady Monarch soccer players earned All-CAA honors. They were Lisa Bernadini, Kirsten Walker, Ashley Kukura And Ashlee Coutu. Coutu who made the CAA's All-Rookie squad is the fifth straight year atleast one Lady Monarch newcomer has earned this honor. The Lady Monarchs raised over $3,000 dollars forBreast Cancer Awareness.

Women's Rowing kicked off its second season of competition by claiming the top three spots at the Head of the Lafayett, and reaching the Grand Final of the Varsity eight at the Occoquan Sprints. In Chattanooga, the Lady Monarchs won the freshman Novice Eight at the Head of the Hooch on the Tennessee River. Freshman Abby Voss was named first team All-CAA. The new rowing center at Lakewood park is expected to be completed this fall.

ODU Baseball lefthander Kyle Hald was co-leader in the CAA with eight wins. He led the league in strikeouts with 95 and ranked in the top five in complete games, shutouts and innings pitched. Senior Jake McAloose led ODU in homers, while sophomore Chris Baker ranked third nationally with a 28-game hitting streakHeading into next season. Shortstop Chris Buss set a new ODU mark with two grand slam homers in The same game against Hofstra while junior C.J. Huyett tossed the 13 overall and only the second nine Inning no-hitter in ODU history when he shut down Maryland-Eastern Shore.

The Women's Lacrosse scoring tandem of Ashley Kellogg and two-sport standout Lisa Bernardini scored 75 goals between them. Kellogg was named All-CAA and newcomer Shelby Davis earned All CAA Rookie honors. Kellogg completed her career as ODU's fourth All-Time in both goals scored with 127 and total points with 151.

Virginia won three team national championships and three individual national titles along with a school record seven Atlantic Coast Conference Championships. Virginia won NCAA national titles in Women's Rowing, and Men's Soccer along with its third straight ITA National Team Indoor championship in Men's Tennis. The men's doubles team of Drew Courtney and Michael Shabaz captured the NCAA title as did Robby Andrews in the 800 meters at the NCAA Indoor Track championships and the Women's Rowing Varsity Four. Field Hockey, Men's Lacrosse and Men's Tennis reached the NCAA semifinals.

Hampton University's Francena McCorory won the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field championship in the 400 meters. Virginia Tech's Queen Harrison became the first female in NCAA history to win both the 100- and 400 meter hurdle national titles. She also won the 60-meter hurdles at the NCAA Indoor Championships.

VCU's men's basketball squad won the CBI Post Season Championship, and William and Mary reached the semi-finals of the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision. Virginia Tech won its Chick-Fil-A Bowl football game.

Liberty led the state with eight conference championships followed by Virginia with seven. Liberty won Big South crowns in Men's and Women's Cross Country, Football,

Women's Basketball, Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field, Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field titles. Virginia won ACC titles in Men's Lacrosse, Women's Rowing, Men's Soccer, Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving, Men's Tennis and Wrestling.

Overall, Virginia Division I schools compiled a 2419-2086-55 record for a winning percentage of .537. Men's teams were 1173-897-29 for a .566 percentage while

the women's teams were at .512 with a 1246-1189-26 mark. There were 17 sports that won over 50 percent of their events led by Men's Swimming (.638), Football (.610), Men's Tennis (.588), Wrestling (.583), Baseball (.575), Men's Basketball (.557), and Field Hockey (.549).

The All-Sport Championship began in 1978-79 and includes winning percentages of only those sports with NCAA sponsored championships. Virginia and Old Dominion are tied with 12 titles each, followed by James Madison with three, Hampton with two, and one crown each for George Mason, Richmond and Virginia Commonwealth.
