Women Top FAU, Men Split to Open Swimming and Diving 2017

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Old Dominion University women’s swimming defeated Florida Atlantic 151-86, while the men’s squad defeated New Jersey Institute of Technology 171-72, and fell to Florida Atlantic 143-98.

The meet started with the ODU women winning the 200-medley relay with a time of 1:49.01. The team featured Colleen VandePoel, Ashley Teller, Emilie Petit and Sofie Sjoberg.

The winning continued the next event in the 1000 free as Victoria Barley won with a time of 10:50.37 and Raquel Couto took second in 10:56.88.

In the 200 free, Leigh-Ann Clark finished second with a time of 1:57.83.

Sjoberg added to her win total with a win in the 50 free in 24.99, while Ashley Brem finished third in 25.16.

Petit won the 200 IM in 2:10.32 while Teller finished third in 2:13.71.

A.J. Caruso won the 1-meter dive with a score of 183.20, the first win of her career.

Petit won her third event of the day with a time of 59.03 in the 100 fly.

Stephanie Norris continued the winning ways with a first place in the 100 free in a time of 53.88 and a third place for Clark in 54.69.

VandePoel cruised to a win in the 100 backstroke by nearly three seconds with a time of 58.41, while Elena Oujikanova finished in second place.

Barley added to her win in the 1000 free with a second place in the 500 free with a time of 5:20.71.

Brem added her first win in the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:05.38, while Teller took second in 1:06.16.

The meet finished the way it started for the women, as the team of VandePoel, Norris, Sjoberg and Brem 200 free relay with a time of 1:39.76.

The men started the meet with a second place finish in the 200-medley relay. The team of Donovan Pope, Philip Nordenberg, Jacob Zeidler and Graham Thatcher finished in a time of 1:34.65.

Lucas Cortini Oliveira won the 1000 free in a time of 9:58.12.

Zeidler took second in the 50 free with a time of 21.45, while Anton Mikaelsson won the 200 IM in a time of 1:55.35.

Cory Moreno and Brant Knoblauch finished second and third in the 1 and 3 meter dives, while Connor Davis added a win in the 100 fly in a time of 51.97.

Thatcher took second in the 100 free in a time of 47.16, while Mikaelsson earned second in the 100 backstroke.

Oliveira added a third place spot in the 500 free with a time of 4:50.55, to go along with his first place in the 1000 free.

The Monarch men ended the day like the women, with a win in the 200 free. Caleb Odeke, Davis, Mikaelsson and Thatcher won in a time of 1:26.27.

ODU takes on North Florida on Wednesday at 9 a.m.
