Tag Montague is in his second season as an assistant coach with the Old Dominion University baseball family. He came to the Monarchs after serving one season as an assistant coach at the University of Richmond. Tag is the infield, hitting and firstbase coach for the Monarchs.
The Richmond, Va. native has served as an assistant coach at Randolph-Macon College in 1998, Atlee High School (1995-97) and for the Waynesboro Generals of the NCAA sanctioned Shenandoah Valley summer league with Terry Rooney. Waynesboro won the 1998 Valley League Championship.
While working with Atlee, he helped guide them to its first appearance in the Virginia state playoffs in 1996.
For Montague, he returns to work with his former coach Tony Guzzo whom he played for at Virginia Commonwealth University. Montague hit .417 in 1991 against Sun Belt Conference opponents. In a game against Radford, he played all nine positions and recorded a save in a 3-0 VCU win. He played with the Rams for just one season after transferring from Pfeiffer College.
At Pfeiffer, he missed just one game in three years as a starter and was named Most Valuable Player as a sophomore.
Montague attended high school at J.R. Tucker in Richmond and helped lead Tucker to the Virginia State title in both 1985 and 1986. He and his wife Melissa are natives of Richmond, Va. He graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a B.S. degree in physical education in 1998.
