Jakob Cadonau and Cosme Rolland De Ravel

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Senior Jakob Cadonau and sophomore Cosme Rolland de Ravel scored a 6-4, 6-2 win over Matisse Bobichon and Mathis Bondaz of VCU to claim the 2023 ITA Atlantic Regional doubles title on Monday at Liberty University.

With the win, the duo now advances to the 2023 ITA Fall Nationals to be held in San Diego, California from November 1-5.

This marks the fourth time a doubles tandem has won the ITA Atlantic Regional under head coach Dominik Mueller. In 2017, Aziz Kijametovic and Francois Musitelli won, while in 2019 the duo of Musitelli and Jannik Giesse captured the crown. Two years later in 2021, Nicola Vidal and Luca Maldoner won the crown in Lynchburg prior to today's win.

The Monarch doubles tandems knocked out the second, fourth, fifth and sixth-seeded teams in the event. ODU duos went 10-2 in doubles, with one loss coming against the eventual championship teammates.

"This was probably the best overall doubles regional performance we ever had. We worked a lot on doubles the past two weeks and it showed. All three teams played with passion and executed their strength," said Mueller. "Winning the regional and qualifying for fall nationals was the cherry on top and I am very happy for Cosme and Jakob. Unfortunately, their bid to the finals came against Codie and Connor, but that's the nature of our sport and the draw format in the fall."

The championship duo started off with an 8-1 win over Charles Courteau and Guilherme Severin of Radford. In the second round, they defeated the second-seeded duo of Hugo Maia and Manuel Goncalves of Virginia Tech 8-7 (7-5).

The semifinal match was a three-set thriller against Codie and Connor van Schalkwyk with Cadonau and Rolland De Ravel advancing to the final with a 6-3, 2-6, 10-5 win.

Codie and Connor van Schalkwyk took down the fourth-seeded duo of Bill Duo and Alexandre LeBlanc of William & Mary 8-3 in their first match and then defeated Oscar Bain and Adamantios Stavrakas of Bucknell 8-4 to make the quarterfinals. In that round they defeated German Samofalov and Romain Gales of VCU 8-7 (7-2).

Maxime Mareschal-Hay and Yanis Moundir started with an 8-0 win over Jake Fellows and Arthur O'Sullivan of Georgetown. In the second round, they scored a win over the 28th-ranked duo nationally and fifth-seeded Ryan Fishback and Albert Orso of Virginia Tech 8-7 (9-7). Their run came to an end in the quarterfinals falling 8-5 to the third-seeded tandem of Jeffrey von der Schulenburg and Alexander Kiefer of Virginia.

The Monarchs fared very well in singles with several players making solid runs in the event. Aryan Saleh won three matches in the silver bracket to advance to the main draw, while Codie van Schalkwyk, Maxime Mareschal-Hay and Yanis Moundir each advanced a round in the main draw.

"For singles, we saw that there is some work out there for us to improve. I thought we played well but lacked some execution," said Mueller. Aryan qualifying into the main draw was a highlight for sure and I think he definitely took a step forward this tournament."

"Overall, I would say this was an A+ in doubles and a B- in singles, with lots to build on.
