NORFOLK, Va. -- Old Dominion head men's basketball coach Jeff Jones announced on Thursday the signing of Tyrone Williams as part of the 2023 recruiting class. Williams, a 6-foot-6, guard from Philadelphia, Pa. joins the Monarchs from the University of Oregon.
Jones was very excited over his scoring punch for the 2023-24 squad. "Ty is a strong, athletic wing that can really score the ball. While softspoken off the court, he is high energy between the lines. Ty will bring a lot of excitement to Chartway Arena," he said.
Williams made a mark as the nation's top scorer playing for Grayson College (Tex.). He averaged 27.6 and then 27.7 points in two years at Grayson. In the 2021-22 season he had 13 games of 30 points or more, including three games of 40 plus points.
He earned All-Conference honors and All-Region honors in each of his two years, and was also Conference Player of the Year while leading the country in scoring his two seasons.
At Oregon, he played in 23 games this past season and had a season high 12 points and 11 rebounds against UC Irvine in the first round of the NIT.
"I chose ODU because I felt like this was the best fit for me," said Williams. "I like how Coach Jones and Coach Brooks believed in me and I feel like I am the missing piece they needed to go win a championship."
Williams joins Yamari Allette, Vasean Allette, Devin Ceaser and Daniel Pounds as members of the 2023 recruiting class.
