NORFOLK, Va. -- Despite 12 hits, Old Dominion dropped the opening game of the series against Quinnipiac, 8-6, on Friday afternoon at the Bud Metheny Complex.
Old Dominion (5-8) left a total of 14 runners on base, including the bases loaded in the eighth and two on in the ninth.
Trailing 4-0 after one, Quinnipiac (5-5) scored one in the second and then two in both the third and fourth innings to take a lead it would not relinquish.
Starting pitcher Jim Fluke received the loss, allowing seven runs in 3.1 innings of work. In relief, Connor Muly, Jason Hartline and Jack Jett combined to toss 4.2 innings of shutout ball, with Jett working out of a key jam in the eighth.
At the plate, Kyle Battle went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI and Vinnie Pasquantino had two RBIs. Matt Schwarz, Will Morgan and DJ Lardge also notched two-hit games for the Monarchs.
The series concludes tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Brett Smith will get the start in game one of the twinbill with Morgan Maguire going in game two.
