2022: Second on the team with 23 appearances, all out of the bullpen ... Was 1-2 with a 5.79 ERA in 23.1 innings ... Gave up 32 hits, 16 runs, 15 earned, while striking out 18 with 12 walks ... Pitched a season-high two innings on four occasions, not allowing a run in two inning stints against Binghamton and VMI ... Battled injuries and multiple surgeries throughout his ODU career.

2021: Pitched in 12 games, all out of the bullpen ... Was 0-0 with a 10.03 ERA ... Pitched 11.2 innings, allowing 18 hits, 14 runs (13 earned), struck out 11 and walked seven ... Pitched a scoreless inning in ODU's 12-5 win over Norfolk State ... Pitched 2.1 shutout innings against Rhode Island, striking out two.

2020: Pitched in four games... Recorded three strikeouts in 2.2 innings of work... Gave up one run, two balls, one double and one triple... Tossed a season-high two strikeouts against Holy Cross (2/22).

2019 (RJR): Did not pitch due to injury.

2018 (RSO): Worked his way into the starting rotation, becoming the Friday starter early in the season ... Pitched in seven games with six starts, before missing all of April and May due to an elbow injury ... Went 1-3 with a 5.67 ERA, striking out 26 in 27 innings, while walking only six ... Posted his best start against Florida Atlantic, an eventual NCAA Regional team, allowing just one earned run in six innings ... Earned the win in the season opener against Saint Louis, another eventual NCAA Regional team, with three innings of shutout relief ... Struck out a season-high twice (against Rutgers and Quinnipiac).

2017 (RFR): Pitched in one game, before missing the rest of the season due to injury (Tommy John Surgery) ... Picked up a win in the lone appearance, allowing two runs in one inning of relief in the comeback, walkoff win over St. Joe's in the ODU Baseball Tournament.

2016 (FR): Posted a 5.22 ERA and a 1-3 record ... Made an appearance in 24 games, while starting four ... Part of the 5-0 shutout of No. 10 NC State ... Fanned 20 batters, including a season high four against the Wolfpack ... Picked up a save against UVA and FIU ... Earned the C-USA Commisioner's Academic Medal and was named to the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll ... SUMMER BALL: Helped lead the Peninsula Pilots to a runner-up finish in the Coastal Plain League, going 5-1 with a 3.48 ERA and one shutout. 

PREP: Brett was varsity starter in both baseball and football since the 10th grade ... On the baseball diamond, he was the Conference Co-Player of the Year and a First Team All-Conference pitching selection as a senior ... Also earned Allstate/VHSL Male Athlete of the Year, Meyers Award Region Athlete of the Year and Second Team All-Region pitching honors ... He was also selected to play in the Virginia East-West All-Star game and was Second Team All-Conference on the mound in 2014 ... On the football field, was a two-year captain and amassed 27 career touchdowns ... Was a First Team All-South Region punter in 2013, along with First Team All-Conference in 2013 and 2014 ... Member of the National Honor Society and FBLA in high school. 

PERSONAL: Son of Steve and Debbie Smith and has two brothers and a sister ... Started a business in high school called "Birdhouses for Homeless" where he would build and sell birdhouses to help feed the homeless ... Both brothers played collegiate sports, with Ryan playing football at Princeton and Brandon playing baseball at ODU and in the independent professional league ... Sister Amanda ran track at Virginia Tech and won two individual ACC Championships and was a three-time All-American ... Favorite pro teams are the Cubs and Colts ... Favorite athlete is Mariano Rivera ... Favorite movie is Never Back Down ... Enjoys surfing, fishing and wakeboarding... Holds a bachelor's in mechanical engineering and a master's in biomedical engineering ... Pursuing a PhD in engineering management and systems engineering.
