PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Old Dominion University women’s rowing team won the Commodore Cup and finished in first place in the Frosh/Novice Eight race at the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta for the second straight year in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Saturday afternoon.
ODU finished seventh or better in all six events they competed in and finished the regatta tied for the women's collegiate team points trophy.
In the Frosh/Novice Eight race, coxswain Diana Howat helped lead ODU to a victory and earned the Commodore Cup with Erin O'Connell at stroke, Kennedy Stafford at 7, Kara Stephan at 6, Carlie Cohen at 5, Emily Hughes at 4, Shannon La Sala at 3, Sabrina Paulsen at 2, and Elizabeth Waltz at bow. Old Dominion’s freshmen finished the race with a time of 15.37, which was one minute faster than the Naval Academy. The Lady Monarchs began their race at 10:15 a.m. and crossed the finish line first before the other 32 competing boats.
“It was an excellent day of racing for us,” said assistant coach Joseph Palmer. “We saw a lot of positive results today that we can keep building on. Winning the Freshen Eight was nice; especially when it’s the second year in a row.”
In the Women’s College & Open Club Eights Final the Lady Monarchs had two boats that finished third and sixth out of 40 competing boats. Coxswain Nicole Sicurella led the Lady Monarchs club eight "A" to a third place finish (time of 16.31) with Jenna Sterling at stroke, Colleen Rennie at 7, Chelsea Trice at 6, Jessica Donlan at 5, Emily Hughes at 4, Miranda Brown at 3, Carlie Cohen at 2, and Sabrina Paulsen at bow.
Coxswain Howat led the Lady Monarchs club eight "B" in the Open Club Eights Final and finished sixth (time of 16.40) out of 40 other boats. Ashley Nardiello was at stroke, Lauren Wright at 7, Kaela Woods at 6, Brett Wolff at 5, Leslie Lomax at 4, Jackie Donlan at 3, Katarina Bauer at 2, and Ashley Mauroff at bow.
In the Open Heavy Championship Eights Final ODU finished fifth out of 20 boats. Coxswain Lydia Cleveland led this boat to a time of 16.06 with Paige Madison at stroke, Raven Howser at 7, Kara Stephan at 6, Kennedy Stafford at 5, Erin O'Connell at 4, Kelsea Shiner at 3, Missy Fruetel at 2, and Keira Flanagan at bow.
The Lady Monarchs also competed in the Open Fours with Cox Final and finished seventh (time of 17.01) in a hotly contested race (only eight seconds separated the top-8 places) out of 40 competing boats. Coxswain Cleveland led Howser at stroke, Madison at 3, Shiner at 2, and Fruetel at bow. Flanagan also competed in the Open Light Singles Final and finished with a time of 18.38.
