NORFOLK, Va. -- The ODU men's tennis team fell to the DePaul Blue Demons at the Folkes-Stevens Indoor Tennis Center today, 4-3. Old Dominion slips to 14-9 overall with the regular season finale tomorrow morning against South Alabama.
DePaul kicked off the match with a sweep of the doubles matchups, winning 8-4, 8-6 and 8-7 (2) in order. With the doubles point, the Blue Demons jumped to a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
ODU sophomore Krzysztof Muzalewski would tie the match at one with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Vanja Grgec at No. 4 singles. Then, the two teams split the next two matches for a 2-2 tie heading into the final three matches.
Senior Yakov Diskin gave the Monarchs their first lead of the day in comeback fashion. He dropped the first set in a tiebreak, but bounced back to win the second and third at No. 3 singles to give Old Dominion a 3-2 lead in the match. Diskin defeated Matija Palinic 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-4.
DePaul would answer, though, finishing off the Monarchs with wins at No. 2 and No. 5 singles for the victory. Junior Tobias Fanselow was the other Monarch to win, earning the win at No. 1 singles over Alasdair Graetz, 6-2, 7-6 (5).
The Monarchs wrap up their 2009-10 schedule with a match at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday against the University of South Alabama Jaguars. It will be Senior Day for Diskin, as he participates in his final home regular season match.
