Shane Smith is in his first season as assistant offensive line coach at Old Dominion.
Smith came to ODU after spending three years as the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Cisco College.
In 2024, Smith oversaw an offensive unit that improved from 282.3 yards per game in 2023 to 300.7. Two of his offensive linemen, Kenneth Smith and James Bess, received All-SWJCFC honors. Kenneth Smith (OT) went on to sign with Austin Peay University (FCS).
In 2023, Smith's first season with the Wranglers was highlighted by Brandon Jones' (OT) Second-Team All-SWJCFC selection. Jones went on to sign with the University of Texas-Permian Basin (DII).
Smith began his coaching career in 2017, when he became a defensive graduate assistant at Eastern New Mexico University (DII) in Portales, New Mexico.
In 2018, Smith moved on to Bemidji State University (DII) in Bemidji, Minnesota. Smith spent one season as the Beaver's defensive line coach. All three starting Defensive Linemen received All- Conference recognition under Smith's tutoring.
Smith then accepted a defensive graduate assistant position with UTEP. Under head coach Dana Dimel and Defensive Coordinator, Mike Cox, Smith served as Assistant Linebacker coach in 2019 and moved into the role of assistant defensive line coach in the spring of 2020.
From 2020-21, Smith served as the defensive line coach at Garland Sachse High School; Smith helped guide Sachse to back-to-back 6A D1 state playoff appearances . In 2022, he was the defensive line coach at Galena Park North Shore High School. While working at North Shore, Smith competed in the 2022 6A Division One UIL State Championship game, with the Mustangs falling to the Duncanville Panthers on December 17, 2022.
Smith played defensive tackle at Kansas from 2009-13. He was named First-Team All-Big 12 Academic three times while on the gridiron for the Jayhawks.
Smith is originally from Albuquerque, New Mexico. He graduated from Kansas with a Bachelor's in secondary education in 2014. Smith also holds a Master's in leadership from UTEP. He and his wife, Maggie, have one daughter, Magnolia.
