NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion’s men’s tennis came away with a big win against P4 opponent Virginia Tech with a 4-3 score on Friday.
ODU’s No. 3 Yanis Moundir and Thomas Nelson began the doubles matches with a win over Maxime St. Hilaire and Frank Thompson (6-2). No. 1 brother duo Connor and Codie Van Schalkwyk then followed in suit with a win over Matt Harper and Alberto Orso (6-3), giving ODU the point and suspending No. 2 Cosme Rolland De Ravel’s and Jean-Karim Olivier De Sardan’s match against Ilyas Fahim and Scott Sculley (3-4).
Hokie St. Hilaire would grab Virginia Tech’s first point of the match with a singles win over No. 1 Connor Van Schalkwyk (7-6, 7-6), with teammate Patrik Jurina following as he defeated No. 3 Codie Van Schalkwyk (7-6, 7-5). No. 4 Moundir would take the next singles point to tie the match at two with a win over Eyal Shumilov (6-3, 3-6, 6-1), though Orso would best No. 6 Aryan Saleh in a come-from-behind win (0-6, 7-6, 6-1). In an effort to keep ODU’s hopes alive, No. 5 Oliver De Sardan was able to down Victor Kimpel (7-6, 7-6), and in the game-deciding match, No. 2 Rolland De Ravel came out on top with a hard-fought win against Fahim (7-6, 5-7, 6-2) in a tiebreaker set.
Old Dominion will return home and look to continue their win streak as they take on Charlotte at 11 a.m. in the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
