ODU Rowing Competes In The Murphy Cup On Saturday

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Old Dominion Rowing team competed in the Murphy Cup on Saturday, Apr. 8. The first varsity 8+ boat led the way for the Monarchs on the day taking second place in its heat and advancing to the grand final. 
 
ODU raced 4 boats, a novice 4+, a varsity 4+ and two varsity 8+ boats. 
 
The day started when the novice 4+ got underway, Old Dominion took fifth place in a boat made up of Izzy Bravo, Stella Flynn, Anna Woodbury, Jada Flemming and the coxswain was Ellen Gortz.The boat finished in a time of 9:42.39.
 
The next race featured Libby Guindon as the coxswain and Gillian Battersby, Ainsley Diesi, Afton Stahl, Kelly Bailey as the crew in the varsity 4+. The boat took fifth place finishing with a time of 8:40.50.
 
The first varsity 8+ team took second in its heat with a time of 6:48.16. The boat made up of Sofia Bespalova, Kinley Zink, Lucy Brennan, Annemarie Hoff, Jay Weber, Maddie Enns, Lily Baumann, Sydnee Blackburn and the coxswain was Ilianna Romanzo were able to advance to the final heat. 
 
The Monarchs second varsity 8+ was made up of Jenna Protacio, Mary Rust, Marie Ahern, Haven Habhab, Izzy Bravo, Bekah Kimman, Lauren Norris, Emma Spinelli and the coxswain was Bella Peycelon took third place in its race finishing with a time of 7:22.46.
 
In the grand final the first varsity 8+ team took fifth place finishing with a time of 6:52.14.
 
'We had a great day of racing as the varsity 8 made the grand final which is awesome for us and to be able to compete with Temple who is a really fast team and hung with them for a good amount of the race," said head coach Brian Conley. "We definitely still have some work to do because the American Championships are still coming up in the next few weeks and hopefully we will do all the work we need to do to be ready for that."
 
The Monarchs are back in action Saturday, Apr. 15 when they will travel to take on Loyola University Maryland in Baltimore.
