NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion men's tennis team headed to Blacksburg this weekend to participate in the Virginia Tech Halloween Weekend Tournament and had a stellar performance going 21-9 over the three-day event.
"A good weekend for us. Several of our guys took a step forward," said ODU Head Coach Dominik Mueller. "We got one weekend of competition left and trying to finish the fall on a high note."
They opened the event facing Virginia Tech on Friday and split 12 matches, winning five of eight singles and one of four in doubles. The duo of Codie van Schalkwyk and Cosme Rolland De Ravel defeated Matt Harper and Alex Orso 6-2. In singles, the Monarchs took straight set wins by Connor Van Schalkwyk, Rolland De Ravel, Yanis Moundir and Aryan Saleh, while Jakob Cadonau won in three sets.
Day two saw the Monarchs tangle with Elon and won all 11 finished matches. In singles, Rolland De Ravel, Cadonau and Maxime Mareschal-Hay all won three set matches.
Against Elon on Sunday, the Monarchs won both doulbes matches and took two of the four in singles. Mareschal-Hay and Moundir won 7-6 in doubles, while the duo of Saleh and Parker Collins-Flores won 7-5. In singles, Moundir and Saleh each took straight set wins.
On the weekend, Moundir and Saleh each went 5-1, while Rolland De Ravel went 4-0 to lead the Monarchs.
The Monarchs will next see action on Nov. 1-5 at the ITA Fall Nationals in San Diego with the duos of Codie and Connor van Schalkwyk along with Jakob Cadonau and Cosme Rolland de Ravel participating in the doubles championships.
