BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Old Dominion University men's swimming team defeated Gardner-Webb, while the ODU women's team topped the Bulldogs 188-73 on Saturday at a tri-meet at Campbell on Saturday.
The men's squad defeated G-W 153-109, while the women's team topped G-W 188-73. The women fell to Campbell, 150-111.
"The competition between the teams today was great. Our Monarchs started the meet out aggressive and held the intensity through some challenging races to really put us in a great position for the reminder of the season. We are looking forward to a great three weeks of training as we prepare for the WVU Invitational in November," ODU head coach Jess Livsey said.
The men's squad earned its first win of the day with a win in the 400-medley relay, as Gustaf Hansson, Peter Durisin, Liam Redman and Noah Wilkins won in a time of 3:27.28.
Miranda Byrne earned the first win for the women's team with a time of 10:54.84 to win the 1,000 freestyle. Teammate Brynn Jewell came in second with a time of 10:55.28.
Freshman Carson Doll added another win for the men's side in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 9:59.55. Doll won again, this time in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:49.69.
Wilkins added a win in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:42.50, while Ryan Lincicum came in second with a time of 1:44.19. Wilkins added his second win of the day, this time edging out Redman in the 100 freestyle with a time of 46.37. Redman finished in 47.48.
Tara Enneking entered the win column, winning the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:06.08. She added a win in the 200 breaststroke with a. time of 2:25.05. Teammate Martina Ciriesi finished second with a time of 2:27.33. Enneking finished off the winning hat trick with a win in the 200 IM, taking the top spot with a time of 2:07.38. Ciriesi again came in second with a time of 2:11.15.
Peter Durisin continued the winning ways for ODU with a nearly three-second win in the 100 breaststroke, with a time of 58.90.
The Monarchs' success in the sprints continued with Liam Redman winning the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.42.
Jacob Cobb won the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:53.91. He added another victory, this one in the 200 IM, with a time of 1:58.44.
In the final event of the day, the women's 200 freestyle relay team came in second with a time of 1:36.79. Byrne, Mary Dunworth, Laila Webb and Summer Miln swam the final race for ODU.
The men's 200 freestyle relay team of Redman, Doll, Lincicum and Wilkins won the final race for the men with a time of 1:24.64.
