NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion men's tennis team (3-5) downed Liberty (5-4) by a 6-1 score on Friday afternoon at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center. The Monarchs avenged a prior 4-3 loss to the Flames in Lynchburg, Va. earlier this season on Feb. 1.
"I think when you play a team within a three week span, you can evaluate your progress and this result shows the hard work this group has put in since we lost to Liberty earlier this season," explained ODU head coach Dominik Mueller. "We are getting better every week and I couldn't be more thrilled about that."
ODU claimed the doubles point after receiving wins from Jannik Giesse/Younes Lalami (6-3) and Luca Maldoner/Nicola Vidal (6-2).
The Monarchs then claimed victory in five of the six singles matches. Picking up singles wins for ODU were Tomislav Podvinski (7-6, 1-6, 11-9), Luca Maldoner (7-6, 6-1), Younes Lalami (6-1, 6-7, 10-5), Oliver Tobisch (6-3, 6-4) and Jannik Giesse (6-4, 6-4).
Old Dominion will welcome Richmond (0-0) to the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center on Sunday, Feb. 21 at 11 a.m. All home indoor ODU tennis matches are closed to the general public.
