EAST LANSING, Mich. - In a field of multiple nationally ranked teams, the women’s golf team finished ahead of No. 38 Miami and No. 50 Texas Tech to finish in fifth place at the 35th Annual Mary Fossum Invitational. Following the first round, the Monarchs improved the team score by 11 strokes, posting a five-under 283, which boosted them three spots to finish the first day in fifth place. The 283 marked the second-best round of the day on the 6,315 yard track. In the final round, ODU posted a 303 to remain in fifth place and collect a 880 54-hole round score.
“We are so thrilled to have another great finish, especially against so many highly ranked teams. In my opinion, the second round at Michigan State was the best regular season round in program history. To shoot five under par on an NCAA Regional Course proves what a great team we have,” said head coach Mallory Hetzel.
Individually, Charlotte De Corte posted an even par and two-under par round to open up the tournament. In the final round, the Belgium native posted a two-over 74 to finish out the tournament even par. Rookie Jana Melichova opened round one two over then continued onto her second 18 with a three-under 69, which put her in a tie for sixth heading into round three. In the final round, Melichova posted a 74 to finish in a tie for 11th. This is the freshman’s second straight top-15 finish.
“In the last seven days we have traveled 2500 miles, and played 144 holes of competitive golf. It was mentally and physically challenging but it also afforded us the opportunity to gain a lot of confidence. We look forward to continuing our good play at Furman next weekend.”
Senior Abigail Portyrata finished the tournament five-over par, which was highlighted by her opening round 72. Sana Tufail finished the tournament in a tie for 37th after a 54-hole total of 226. Sophomore Noemie Sudron tallied a 242 three-round total.
