CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Old Dominion and Marshall split the series-opening doubleheader on Friday at Appalachian Power Park in Charleston, West Virginia.
The Monarchs (13-31, 6-17 C-USA) won game two, 8-2, after Marshall (19-24, 7-16 C-USA) grabbed the series opener, 11-6.
In game one, the teams combined for six home runs in a 17-run slugfest, but the Herd pounded out 18 hits compared to the Monarchs' eight to hold on for the 11-6 victory.
Matt Schwarz (2-5, HR, 3 RBI) led ODU at the plate in game one, while Culver Lamb (1-5, HR, RBI) and Will Morgan (1-1, HR, RBI, BB) both hit solo home runs. Morgan Maguire (4.2 IP, 10 H, 8 ER, 2 BB, 2 K) received the loss on the mound for ODU.
Game two was then a story of first for the Monarchs, as Luke Krantz earned his first collegiate win, Connor Muly picked up his first career save and Devon Adams hit his first career home run in the 8-2 victory.
On the hill, the true freshman trio of Ryne Moore (4 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K), Krantz (3 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K) and Muly (2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K) combined to strike out 10 Marshall batters, while walking only three.
At the plate, Adams (1-2, HR, 2 RBI, 2 BB) and Lamb (1-5, HR, 2 RBI) both hit two-run homers to lead the charge offensively. Lamb has now hit four home runs in his last three games. Erik Stock (2-4, 2 2B, 2 RBI), Craig Lopez (2-3, 2B, 2 R, RBI) and Schwarz (1-4, 2B, RBI, 2 R) also had strong performances in game two.
The series finale is scheduled for Sunday at 10 a.m. ET.
