NORFOLK, Va. -- UAB, behind a complete-game performance from starting pitcher Tanner Graham, defeated Old Dominion, 6-3, in the series opener on a warm Friday evening at the Bud Metheny Complex.
Eight of the game's nine runs were scored in the first three innings, as UAB (15-17, 7-6 C-USA) hit four home runs to build a 6-2 lead through three.
The Blazers maintained that lead into the ninth, when Old Dominion (10-22, 3-10 C-USA) trimmed the lead with an unearned run, but Graham worked around a leadoff walk and an error to finish off the complete game.
Erik Stock (3 IP, 6 R, 3 ER, 2 K) took the loss for the Monarchs. The ODU bullpen, headlined by Corey Klak (2.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R) and Jason Hartline (3.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 K), combined to throw six shutout innings.
At the plate, Will Morgan (1-4, RBI) and Kyle Battle (0-3, RBI, SF) drove in runs for ODU.
The Monarchs have now lost six in a row for the first time since 2012.
Game two is set for tomorrow at 4 p.m. ET.
