JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. -- The Old Dominion women's golf team finished seventh out of 17 teams at the Briar's Creek Invitational this week at The Golf Club at Briar's Creek in South Carolina.
"Briar's Creek proved to be a challenging course and the conditions were tough from start to finish," said head coach Mallory Hetzel. "Everyone battled hard and we were able to beat some good teams."
ODU (+24) entered the day in a tie for seventh with Kansas and carded a 12-over 300 in wet and rainy conditions to remain in seventh place. The Monarchs finished ahead of three Power-5 teams and also four strokes ahead of 37th-ranked East Carolina.
No. 29 North Carolina (-16) won the event.
Individually, Charlotte De Corte (+1) was the top-placing Monarch, finishing in a tie for 12th. Maggie Simmermacher (+7) and Katerina Vlasinova (+9) also placed in the top half of the 90-player field. Simmermacher tied for 36th and Vlasinova tied for 44th.
Rounding out the ODU competitors were Abigail Poryrata (+11), Sana Tufail (+11) and Noemie Sudron (+11), who all finished in a tie for 50th. Sudron competed in the event as an individual.
"We have three weeks until we compete again, which gives us plenty of time to rest and prepare," said Hetzel. "We will have our best stuff come April."
Up next, the Monarchs round out their regular season April 8-10 at the Brickyard Collegiate in Macon, Georgia.
