NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Old Dominion men’s tennis team (2-1) dropped a 4-3 match at No. 23 nationally ranked Columbia (1-0) on Saturday afternoon at the Dick Savitt Tennis Center.

“We scheduled the hardest opponents we could find on purpose to get tested on the highest level,” explained ODU head coach Dominik Mueller. “We knew playing on the road against the number 23 ranked team would be a hard challenge and I think we took on that challenge at times. We had great energy in doubles, but couldn’t maintain that same focus level in singles. We can’t be satisfied with a close loss and must get better to start beating those type of teams.”

Old Dominion jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after No. 22 Aziz Kijametovic/Francois Musitelli and Adam Moundir/Javier Jover Maestre claimed victory in No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.

Aziz Kijametovic and Jacob Nicolussi each won their respective singles matches, but Columbia would claim victory on four of the six singles courts to ultimately pull out a 4-3 win on Saturday in New York. Kijametovic took down No. 38 nationally ranked Jackie Tang in straight sets (7-5, 6-4) in No. 2 singles.

The Monarchs will be back in action tomorrow, Sunday, Jan. 21 at 12:00 p.m. EST against Penn at the Hecht Tennis Center.
