NORFOLK, Va. -- New Old Dominion women's basketball head coach Nikki McCray-Penson has officially announced the addition of three assistant coaches to her staff.
Joining McCray-Penson on her Lady Monarch staff are: Ed Baldwin, a former head coach at Charlotte with 28 years of college coaching experience; Richard Fortune, a former assistant at Old Dominion and most recently an assistant at VCU; and Brittany Young, a former assistant at Stetson, Daytona State and South Carolina.
Read below for more details on the three assistant coaches.
ED BALDWIN, ASSISTANT COACH
Former Charlotte women's basketball head coach Ed Baldwin comes to Old Dominion with nearly 30 years of experience coaching at the collegiate level.
"Ed has been coaching on the college level for 28 years," said McCray-Penson. "He comes from a pedigree of great coaches, starting with the late Kay Yow and also Jim Foster and Dawn Staley."
Baldwin most recently coached in the WNBA, where he coached for three seasons with the Dallas Wings and Tulsa Shock.
"I am really excited to be a part of the rebirth of Old Dominion women's basketball under Coach McCray," said Baldwin. "I feel that we have all of the necessary resources to build a great foundation and a great program."
Prior to his three seasons in the WNBA, Baldwin spent four years as an assistant coach at Ohio State on Jim Foster's staff from 2008 to 2013. He was also the Director of Basketball Operations at Ohio State during the 2007-08 season.
Before his stint at Ohio State, Baldwin coached alongside Dawn Staley at Temple from 2000 to 2002 and also served as an assistant at South Carolina for two seasons from 2002 to 2004.
Baldwin made his name in the head coaching realms with a successful 13-year tenure as head coach at Charlotte from 1988 to 2000. Baldwin left as the winningest women's basketball coach in program history with 175 victories, establishing single-season school records for wins and winning percentage.
Prior to his arrival at Charlotte, Baldwin worked for three years as an assistant to the legendary Kay Yow at NC State.
Baldwin began his coaching career at Raleigh's Broughton High School. The Caps compiled an incredible 124-26 record during his six years and won state 4-A championships in 1983 and 1985.
Baldwin graduated from North Carolina Central University with a degree in social studies in 1976. As an athlete, he was a four-year letterwinner on the offensive line in football.
RICHARD FORTUNE, ASSISTANT COACH (RECRUITING COORDINATOR)
An assistant for three years at Old Dominion, Richard Fortune returns to ODU after two successful seasons as an assistant coach at VCU.
"Richard is no stranger to ODU and Hampton Roads," said McCray-Penson. "He is a great recruiter and we are fortunate to have him back home."
During his tenure at VCU, Fortune helped guide the Rams to a 39-25 overall record in two seasons, including a 23-10 mark in the 2015-16 campaign that ended with a WNIT appearance.
"I am really excited to be back at Old Dominion and to have the opportunity to work with Coach McCray," said Fortune. "I am looking forward to getting the program back on top, where it belongs. The University has provided us with everything we need to be a successful program."
While on the sidelines in Norfolk, the Lady Monarchs turned in a 62-39 record with two postseason appearances over the course of three seasons. During his time at ODU, he mentored Shae Kelley, who became just the fifth player in program history to score 1,000 points in only two seasons and earn All Conference-USA First Team accolades.
From 2010 to 2012, Fortune was an assistant at UCF, where he helped guide the Knights to the 2011 Conference USA Championship. Before his stint in Orlando, Fortune spent three years as an assistant for the highly acclaimed Boo Williams AAU Girl's Nike Travel Team.
In addition, Fortune served as an assistant coach with the men's basketball team at his alma mater, Virginia State University, following one season as an assistant with John Marshall High School boy's basketball.
Prior to his stints at Virginia State and John Marshall, he was the boy's head coach at Caroline High School in Milford, Virginia, for three seasons.
Fortune graduated from Virginia State in 1988.
BRITTANY YOUNG, ASSISTANT COACH
A former assistant at Stetson, South Carolina and Daytona State, Brittany Young comes to Old Dominion after two seasons with the Stetson Hatters.
"Brittany has been coaching for the last five years," said McCray-Penson. "She has a great passion for young people and is a tremendous worker. She worked with us at South Carolina and knows what success looks like."
Last year, Young helped guide Stetson to a 26-win season and the program's first-ever Atlantic Sun regular season championship.
"I'm truly blessed to be a part of such a prestigious university," said Young. "I am honored to have the opportunity to work with Coach McCray and I am looking forward to working with Ed and Richard. When I think of ODU, I think of players like Anne Donovan, Ticha Penicheiro and Nancy Lieberman. I look forward to restoring that tradition to the program."
Prior to Stetson, Young spent two seasons as an assistant at Daytona State College, where she served as the program's recruiting coordinator, director of player development, director of operations, academic coordinator and strength and conditioning liaison.
From 2011-13, Young served as a graduate assistant at South Carolina under Dawn Staley. During her two seasons at South Carolina, the Gamecocks were nationally ranked and twice earned a berth to the NCAA Tournament.
In 2011, Young was one of 26 recipients of the NCAA Ethnic Minority and Women's Enhancement Postgraduate Scholarship for Careers in Athletics.
Prior to beginning her coaching career, Young was a CoSIDA Academic All-American and all-conference performer at Francis Marion University. She is a member of the school's all-decade team and remains one of three players in FMU history to surpass 1,000 points and 500 assists in a career.
In addition to her success on the court, Young was President of the Student Athletic Advisory Council. She graduated from Francis Marion in 2008 and then obtained her master's degree in Sport and Entertainment Management from South Carolina in 2013.
