An assistant for three years at Old Dominion, Richard Fortune returns to ODU after two successful seasons as an assistant coach at VCU.
Fortune enters his first season under head coach Nikki McCray-Penson and his fourth overall at the university.
"Richard is no stranger to ODU and Hampton Roads," said McCray-Penson. "He is a great recruiter and we are fortunate to have him back home."
During his tenure with at VCU, Fortune helped guide the Rams to a 39-25 overall record in two seasons, including a 23-10 mark in the 2015-16 campaign that ended with a WNIT appearance.
"I am really excited to be back at Old Dominion and to have the opportunity to work with Coach McCray," said Fortune. "I am looking forward to getting the program back on top, where it belongs. The University has provided us with everything we need to be a successful program."
While on the sidelines in Norfolk, the Lady Monarchs turned in a 62-39 record with two postseason appearances over the course of three seasons. During his time at ODU, he mentored Shae Kelley, who became just the fifth player in program history to score 1,000 points in only two seasons and earn All Conference-USA First Team accolades.
From 2010 to 2012, Fortune was an assistant at UCF, where he helped guide the Knights to the 2011 Conference USA Championship. Before his stint in Orlando, Fortune spent three years as an assistant for the highly acclaimed Boo Williams AAU Girl's Nike Travel Team.
In addition, Fortune served as an assistant coach with the men's basketball team at his alma mater, Virginia State University, following one season as an assistant with John Marshall High School boy's basketball.
Prior to his stints at Virginia State and John Marshall, he was the boy's head coach at Caroline High School in Milford, Virginia, for three seasons.
Fortune graduated from Virginia State in 1988.
