HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Will Morgan went 4-for-5 with three doubles and six RBIs and Old Dominion evened the series against No. 16 Southern Miss with a thrilling 13-11 victory on Saturday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park.

With the game tied 8-8 heading to the eighth inning, Old Dominion (27-12, 11-6 C-USA) scored four runs in the top of the frame for what proved to be the winning runs.

Nick Walker drew a bases-loaded walk to give the Monarchs a 9-8 advantage, before Morgan belted a bases-clearing double to extend the lead to 12-8.

All four ODU runs in the eighth came off of Southern Miss' (30-11, 13-4 C-USA) closer Nick Sandlin, who entered the game with 0.28 ERA. Sandlin had not allowed a run in league play and had allowed only two earned runs on the season.

In a back-and-forth contest, the Golden Eagles jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning. The Monarchs answered with five runs, including a pair of two-run home runs by Jared Young and Turner Bishop, in the third. ODU would never relinquish that lead, despite Southern Miss tying the game at 8-8 with a four-run sixth inning.

After Walker and Morgan provided the Monarchs with a 12-8 lead in the top of the eight, USM answered with two runs in the bottom of the eighth to cut the lead to 12-10. ODU added an insurance run in the top of ninth on a Zach Rutherford sac fly, before Corey Klak closed out the game, despite allowing a leadoff solo homer, for his second save of the year.

At the plate, Morgan became the first Monarch since Chris Baker with three doubles in a game, while his six RBIs were the most by any ODU player this season. Bishop went 2-for-5 with a double, home run and three RBIs, while Young went 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. Young also extended his season-long hitting streak to 13 games. Kyle Battle continued to produce out of the leadoff spot, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Walker went 1-for-3 with a double, two runs and an RBI.

On the mound, Craig Lopez earned his fourth win of the season with 2.2 innings of relief. Starting pitcher Adam Bainbridge, who entered the game with a 0.99 ERA, battled through five innings, allowing seven earned runs.

The three-game set concludes tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. ET/10:30 a.m. CT. Freshman John Wilson will get the nod on the mound against USM's Taylor Braley.
