NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion men’s tennis team (7-1) defeated Elon (1-5) by a 5-2 score on Sunday afternoon at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center. The Monarchs clinched their victory with a 4-0 score.
“I was very pleased with our intensity and focus level in doubles,” said ODU head coach Dominik Mueller. “We can see progress in doubles and that's encouraging. We got off to a good start in singles and won three matches in straight sets. I wish we could have closed some off the other matches a little better, but overall another great team win.”
Aziz Kijametovic/Jose Nunez Navarro (6-4) and Michael Weindl/Javier Jover Maestre (6-1) won in doubles play to give ODU an early 1-0 advantage.
No. 24 Adam Moundir made it 2-0 for ODU when he defeated Felipe Sarrasague 7-5, 6-2.
In No. 2 singles Michael Weindl gave Old Dominion a 3-0 lead with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Mario Paccini.
Aziz Kijametovic sealed the deal with a straight set victory over Petar Tomic 6-2, 6-5.
Justin Herrera won in three sets against Louis Rico 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 in No. 6 singles.
Old Dominion will travel to Columbus to take on South Carolina on Friday, Feb. 10 at noon. Then the Monarchs will square-off with Clemson on Sunday, Feb. 12 at 1:00 p.m.
