NORFOLK, Va. -- Old Dominion scored double-digit runs for the second consecutive game, as the Monarchs defeated LIU Brooklyn, 16-8, on Saturday afternoon at the Bud Metheny Complex.
After scoring 12 runs thorugh the first three innings last night, the Old Dominion (2-0) bats were once again hot from the outset. The Monarchs scored a run in each of the first five innings, including a five-spot in the fifth inning.
With the early offense, the Monarchs led 13-2 after the fifth, but LIU Brooklyn clawed back into the game (0-2), scoring four runs in the sixth and two in the seventh to close the ODU lead to 13-8. However, the Monarchs answered with three runs in the bottom of the seventh to extend the lead to the final margin of eight.
Overall, a total of five Monarchs had two or more hits on the afternoon, including West Virginia transfer Shaun Wood, who went 2-for-3 with a double and 4 RBIs, and Zach Rutherford, who went 2-for-6 with two doubles, two runs and two RBIs.

Morgan Maguire earned the victory on the mound in his first career start. The sophomore allowed two runs and struck out six in five innings of work. Newcomers Craig Lopez and Corey Klak helped close out the game, combining to allow two earned runs in the final 3.1 innings.
Old Dominion will try for the sweep tomorrow in the final game of the series at 1 p.m. at The Bud. True freshman John Wilson is projected to take the mound for ODU against LIU's Nick Freijomil.
