NORFOLK, Va. -- Jeremy Cox ran for 162 yards and two touchdowns to lead Old Dominion over UMass, 36-16, on Friday evening at Foreman Field at S.B. Ballard Stadium.
Old Dominion (4-2) finished the game with a season-high 522 total yards of offense. Ray Lawry added 88 yards and a touchdown on the ground and David Washington completed 20 of his 35 pass attempts for 248 yards and a touchdown.
Midway through the third quarter UMass pulled to within six at 22-16, but ODU followed with a seven play, 73-yard drive as Ray Lawry scored an 18-yard touchdown on 4th and 2 to make the score 29-16.
Jeremy Cox scored his second TD of the game, an 18-yarder to make the score 36-16 while the defense iced the game with interceptions from Rob Thompson and Shadow Williams.
The ODU defense gave up just 167 yards in the second half.
ODU scored on their first drive of the game with an eight-yard touchdown pass from David Washington to Travis Fulgham. The Monarchs drove 71 yards in 10 plays to take the 7-0 lead.
The Monarchs tacked on a 26-yard field goal from Brad Davis to take a 10-0 lead. The big play on the drive was a 56-yard completion from Washington to Jonathan Duhart to the UMass five.
Marquis Young got UMass on the board with a 12-yard touchdown run to make the score 10-7 early in the second quarter.
ODU added a 16-yard Jeremy Cox touchdown run to take a 16-9 lead, however, UMass blocked the extra point and returned it for a two-point conversion.
Davis’ 38 yard field goal with 10 seconds left in the first half gave ODU a 19-9 halftime lead.
Defensively, Rob Thompson and Shadow Williams each recorded an interception, while Bunmi Rotimi, Anthony Wilson and Jude Brenya each tallied a sack.
Zach Pascal led the receivers with six catches for 92 yards while Jonathan Duhart had three grabs for 77 yards, and Travis Fulgham had four receptions for 27 yards and a touchdowns.
Justice Davila led the defense with nine tackles, while Aaron Young and Sean Carter had six apiece.
The Monarchs are on a bye next week before heading to WKU on Oct. 22 at 7 p.m.
