Beam Delivers Walk-Off Single, Monarchs Top Manhattan 6-5 in 12 Innings

NORFOLK, Va. - Kyle Beam delivered an RBI single in the 12th inning to score pinch-runner Cory Alexander to push Old Dominion University baseball to a 6-5 victory over Manhattan in the second game of the ODU Baseball Tournament.

Pinch-hitter Chris Livers began the inning with a single to left field and was replaced by Alexander.  Connor Myers moved Alexander to second with a sacrifice bunt.  Alexander advanced to third on a ground out from Nick Walker. Beam then followed by powering an 0-2 pitch into center field for the game-winner.

Manhattan took a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the eighth.  Jason McMurray knocked a one-out single and moved to second on a ground out from Justin Hayes. Nick Lustrino drilled a single to score McMurray to make the score 5-4.  Grey Finwood reached on an error by the short stop to move Lustrino to second before Myers tied the game with a single to right field.

Manhattan took the first lead of the game with a Christian Santisteban RBI fielder's choice.  The Monarchs got on the board in the fourth as Zach Rutherford scored from second on an error by the MC second basemen.

The Jaspers retook the lead in the fifth as Santisteban knocked an RBI single for a 2-1 lead. ODU took its first lead of the night in the bottom of the sixth.  Rutherford led off with a single while Beam followed with another single.  Kurt Sinnen walked to bring up McMurray who sent a double to left center to score Rutherford and Beam. 

Manhattan surged ahead with two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth as Santisteban drove in two more with a single.

Rutherford led the Monarchs with a 3-for-6 night at the plate while Beam, Lustrino and McMurray added two hits apiece.  Santisteban was 2-for-5 with four RBI for the Jaspers.

Victor Diaz earned his first win of the season in relief, pitching a scoreless 12th inning.  Sam Sinnen started for ODU, going five innings, allowing four hits, two runs and his first earned run of the season. 

ODU plays Virginia Tech tomorrow at 4 p.m. in the second game of the ODU baseball tournament while Manhattan plays Delaware at noon.
