RICHMOND, Va. – The No. 54 nationally ranked Old Dominion men’s tennis team (7-3) proved to be too much for Virginia Commonwealth (9-2) by a 5-2 score on Sunday afternoon at the Thalhimer Tennis Center. The loss, was just VCU’s second of the season and first setback at home this season, as the Rams were a perfect 8-0 at Thalhimer entering Sunday’s match.
The Tennis Monarchs jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage after claiming the doubles point with victories from Adam Moundir/Aziz Kijametovic on Court No. 1 and Michael Weindl/Jacob Nicolussi sealed the deal on Court No. 2.
Zvonimir Podvinski made the team score 2-1 when he took down VCU’s Arvid Noren in straight sets (6-3, 7-6) in No. 5 singles.
Aziz Kijametovic made quick work out of Virginia Commonwealth’s Vitor Lima (6-4, 6-4) in No. 2 singles, giving the Tennis Monarchs a 3-2 lead.
After dropping the first set, Old Dominion’s Michael Weindl shined in sets two and three to get the better of VCU’s Catalin Fifea (3-6, 6-2, 6-4), lifting the Monarchs to victory on Sunday in Richmond, Va.
Jacob Nicolussi pushed Old Dominion to a 5-2 win after he took down Virginia Commonwealth’s Louis Ishizaka (6-3, 3-6, 10-5) on Court No. 6.
NEXT UP FOR THE TENNIS MONARCHS
Old Dominion will return home to host a double-header on Friday, Feb. 26 against Bucknell at 12:30 p.m. and then Hampton at 6:00 p.m. The Tennis Monarchs will then travel to Raleigh, N.C. to take on No. 30 N.C. State on Sunday, Feb. 28 at 1:00 p.m.
