NORFOLK, Va. – The No. 54 nationally ranked Old Dominion Tennis Monarchs (6-3) extended their home winning streak to five when they defeated East Carolina (6-3) by a 5-2 score and then swept Howard (0-8), 7-0, at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center on Friday.
East Carolina took an early lead in the first match of the day when they claimed the doubles point.
Old Dominion followed up with five straight singles victories. ODU’s Adam Moundir was too much for ECU’s Tendai Tapfuma (7-6, 6-1) in No. 1 singles. On Court No. 2 Old Dominion’s Michael Weindl defeated Vlad Anghel (6-2, 6-4). In No. 3 singles, ODU’s Aziz Kijametovic had no problem with Fredric Lehfeldt, 6-2, 6-2.
Zvonimir Podvinski handled East Carolina’s Ronny Georgi in straight sets (6-3, 6-3), while Jacob Nicolussi made quick work out of Will Bisssett (6-0, 6-2), giving Old Dominion dominating victories in five of six singles matches.
The Monarch duo of Theophile Lanthiez and Sam Perelman jumped started ODU’s winning ways in the second match of the day against Howard when they claimed a 6-1 win over the Bison’s Myron Davis and Spencer Kelly.
Michael Weindl and Jacob Nicolussi sealed the deal for the doubles point for the Tennis Monarchs, when they took down Ismael Kaouche and William Jones, 6-2.
Freshman Justin Herrera picked up his first win in a Monarch uniform with a commanding straight set 6-1, 6-0 victory over Howard’s Hawkins Owens. The Monarchs impressively won every set against Howard, cruising their way to a 7-0 victory.

No. 54 Old Dominion will next travel to Richmond to square off with the cross-state rival VCU (9-1) in their next dual match this Sunday, Feb. 21 at 1:00 p.m.
