BIG MOMENTS
Following a Charlotte score to give the 49ers a 7-0 lead, David Washington entered at quarterback and on his first pass since the last game of the 2013 season, tossed a 53-yard touchdown pass to Zach Pascal to get ODU on the board.
Early in the second quarter ODU drove to the Charlotte 23, aided by long completions to Travis Fulgham and Zach Pascal. The drive stalled but true freshman Chris Kirtley drilled the first of three field goals to make the score 17-9.
Following a Monarch touchdown Charlotte put together a drive and attempted a 48-yard field goal, but Rashaad Coward broke through and blocked the kick that Marvin Branch returned to the ODU 45. The blocked kick led to another Kirtley field goal and cut the lead to 24-22.
The teams traded touchdowns to make the score 31-29, Charlotte had first and goal at the ODU and second and third down from the Monarch 3, but the defense stiffened to force a Charlotte field goal and increase their lead to 34-29.
On the final ODU touchdown drive, the Monarchs had two huge third down conversions. On 3rd and 10 Washington lobbed a 33-yard pass to Pascal, and later on 3rd and 7, Washington rushed for 10 yards leading up to the final touchdown pass.
