BRADENTON. Fla. – The No. 67 Old Dominion University women’s tennis team fought hard but fell short (6-0) against the No. 1 ranked team in the land, the Duke Blue Devils, on Wednesday afternoon at the prestigious IMG Tennis Academy.

The former No. 1 ranked tennis player in the world, Martina Hingis, was on-hand at the IMG Tennis Academy in Bradenton, Fla. for the Lady Tennis Monarchs match against the No. 2 ranked Duke Blue Devils.

Hingis was a four-time champ of the Australian Open (1997, 1998, 1999 and 2002) two-time victor of the French Open (1998 and 2000), two-time winner of Wimbledon (1996 and 1998) and won the US Open in 1998. Hingis also won a calendar-year doubles Grand Slam in 1998.

“I was proud of our program today, said head coach Dom Manilla. “Our players put themselves in a position to compete against the nation’s best and embraced it with great poise and class. Although the score didn’t go our way, we competed hard all the way to the end and represented ODU in a way that made everyone proud to be a Monarch. Moving forward, we are hungry for our match against William and Mary!”
