ATLANTA, Ga. – The Old Dominion University women’s tennis team will put their unbeaten 3-0 record on the line on Saturday, February 1, when the Lady Monarchs look to shock the No. 20 Yellow Jackets from Georgia Tech (1-1). Action is set to take place beginning at 12:00 p.m. at the Byers Tennis Complex in Atlanta, Ga.
ODU enters Saturday’s showdown with wins against Howard (4-1), Norfolk State (7-0) and most recently at Penn (4-3).
Against Penn, the Lady Monarchs started the day out by winning the first two double’s matches, giving ODU a 1-0 advantage. In doubles, Old Dominion’s freshmen tandem of Ingrid Vojcinakova and Marijana Novakovic claimed a 6-2 victory over Penn’s Sonya Latycheva and Stephanie Do. Also picking up a double’s win were Nike Khmolovska and Ivana Vukovic, as they beat Jaime Yapp-Shing and Srinidhi Raghavan, 6-2. Nikol Hristova and Melissa Esnal Olguin’s match was stopped while the score was 2-2, due to the clinch rule.
In singles, Nika Khmolovska took down Jaime Yapp-Shing in straight sets (7-6(7), 7-5). Marijana Novakovic also won her single’s match, as she made quick work of Penn’s Stephanie Do (6-2, 6-2). Also handling business for the Lady Monarchs, was the senior from Spain, Melissa Esnal Olguin, who got the better of Srinidhi Raghavan in a marathon of a match (5-7, 6-1, 11-9).
Meet the 2013-14 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (1-1)
The Georgia Tech women's tennis team checks in at No. 20 in the 2014 ITA Women's Season-Opening Poll, which was released on January 2. The sophomore doubles duo of Megan Kurey and Kendal Woodard are currently ranked No. 4 in the nation after winning the 2013 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Doubles Championships this past fall. Kurey and Woodard have won 12 straight doubles matches.
So far this season, the Yellow Jackets have defeated the No. 25 ranked team in the land, Nebraska, 4-0. GT has also lost at the hands of No. 16 Vanderbilt, 4-3.
Second year Georgia Tech head coach Rodney Harmon was the 1996 and 1997 Big East Conference Coach of the Year during his time with the Hurricanes. Last season, Harmon guided the Yellow Jackets to a 15-10 overall record and 7-4 conference mark.
In the 2007 National Championship, Georgia Tech defeated UCLA 4-2 to claim the school’s first ever NCAA title.
