ODU Sweeps George Washington; Lady Monarchs Fall to Rutgers

NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion's men's and women's swimming teams swept George Washington, while the Lady Monarchs fell to Rutgers on Dec. 1 in the J.C. "Scrap" Chandler Pool.

The Monarchs beat George Washington 144-109; the Lady Monarchs dominated George Washington by a score of 198-84 but lost to Rutgers 170-120.

Kimberley Rashleigh continued her hot streak by setting a new pool record in the 200 yard IM and won the race with a time of 2:06.25. Teammate Laura Cempel finished second in that race. Rashleigh also took first in the 100 yard backstroke (57.53) and placed second in the 200 yard backstroke. In the 200 yard medley relay, Rashleigh along with Amber Wingfield, Jessica Hubert, and Savannah Bowers finished in third.

The Lady Monarchs also got plenty of help from Yesim Giresunlu as she won the 500 yard freestyle (5:03.23) and the 1000 yard freestyle (10:19.40). Danielle Naylor finished the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 10:31.11 which was good enough for third place. Savannah Bowers finished in second place (1:54.63) in the 200 yard freestyle while Giresunlu placed fourth (1:56.45).

Jessica Hubert took first place in the 100 yard butterfly (57.17). Morgan Johnson finished third in the 100 yard freestyle. Johnson along with Mackenzie Payment, Ashley Luchsinger, and Savannah Bowers won the 400 yard freestyle relay (3:36.14).

The men's team got strong performances from a lot of swimmers in their win against George Washington. Bernardo Figueredo won the 1000 yard freestyle (9:47.73), while Logan Teal placed fourth. Figueredo also took gold in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 4:46.01.

Ben Hansen won the 100 yard freestyle (47.68) and took second in the 50 yard freestyle (21.93). Teammate Ben Leach finished just behind Hansen in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 22.06.

Daniel Chalfant won the 200 yard backstroke (1:54.94) while Byrne Francisco finished in third.

Vitor Sa had another great day in the water for the Monarchs as he won the 200 yard freestyle (1:42.37) and tied for first with Andrew Crockett in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 50.78. Sidni Hoxha (1:44.27) finished just behind Sa in second place in the 200 yard freestyle.

Reed Mathews
(1:53.07) won the 200 yard butterfly while Jason Brame (1:55.19) finished in second place. Mathews also took third in the 100 yard butterfly.

Jason Haigh
(2:09.07) won the 200 yard breaststroke, while teammates Jobin Bahmanipour and Ryan Telep finished in third and fourth places respectively. Haigh also finished in second place (59.23) in the 100 yard breaststroke with Bahmanipour and TJ Ewer finishing in third and fourth. In the 200 yard medley relay Haigh helped propel the Monarchs to a first place finish along with Crockett, Sa, and Hoxha (1:33.32).

Ryan Telep
took second place in the 100 yard backstroke (53.50) for the Monarchs.

This concludes action for Old Dominion until Jan. 12 when ODU will take on UMBC in Baltimore, Md.
