NORFOLK, VA-- Six Monarchs scored in double figures as ODU defeated Virginia State, 95-51 in their final exhibition before the start of the regular season on Friday.
Freshman Aaron Bacote(Hampton, VA.) and sophomore Dimitri Batten (Newport News, VA.) both scored 17, followed by 14 points from junior Donte Hill (Virginia Beach, VA.), 11 from freshman Keenan Palmore (Stone mountain, GA.) and 10 points each from senior Nick Wright (Suffolk, VA.) and junior Anton Larsen (Copenhagen,Denmark). In all, nine of the 10 Monarchs who played scored.
The Monarchs shot .574 (35-61) from the floor and hit 50 percent (9-18) from three point range. ODU also dominated the boards, 52-23 as senior forward DeShawn Painter (Norfolk, VA.) and Nick Wright hauled down eight each, followed by seven boards from Palmore and six by Larsen.
ODU jumped out to 21 point lead, 33-12 with 6:03 left in the first half after two Palmore free throws,and took a 44-25 score into halftime. ODU led by as many as 46 (94-48) with 1:37 left in the contest.
For the exhibtion two games, ODU averaged 98.5 points while allowing only 58.0. The Monarchs shot .617 from the field and .515 from beyond the arc as well as a 51.0 rebound average to just 27.5 by the opponents.
ODU opens the regular season on Friday with the Liberty Tax Classic, presented by Athletes in Action.There will be two games each day.
FOOD DONATION- There will be a food drive in conjuction with the Governor's Holiday Hoops Classic on Dec 22nd in Richmond where ODU will play Virginia. There will be a friendly competition to see who can contribute the most food between now and dec. 15th.
The following events will be promoted as opportunities to donate to the food drive.
The Liberty Tax Classic - $3 discount at the door with a food donation, (or provide the group rate) for any of the three daysWrestling match vs. Wisconsin -$2 discount - or $4 admission with donationODU vs. Cal - women's bball - Nov. 30 - group discount admission of $5 with donationODU-VCU game on Dec. 7 - no discounts, no incentives.
All food donations during the Liberty Tax Classic games next weekend should be directed to the Raisin Canes Guest Services area on the concourse of the Constant Center. Fans can receive a $3 discount on tickets purchased to these three games. They will need to inform the ticket seller that they have a food donation in order to get the discount.
