NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion University women's soccer built a two-goal lead, but was unable to hang on, falling at Hartford 3-2 Sunday afternoon.
With the loss, ODU drops to 1-2 while the Hawks move to 1-0-1 on the year.
With the score tied at two with less than 14 minutes to play, Caroline Dixon was awarded a penalty kick and delivered the game-winning goal to give the Hawks a 3-2 win.
ODU got on the board first in the 37th minute as Nikki Clarke sent a free kick into the box that Aubrie Ewell headed into the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
The Lady Monarchs took the 1-0 lead into halftime and pushed the lead to 2-0 in the 54th minute. Taylor Mertz sent a cross pass in from the left side that was misplayed by a Hartford defender into the goal.
Hartford started their comeback in the 70th minute as Elise Gallpo sent a centering pass to Christin Horst who sent a shot from the middle of the field past the ODU keeper to make the score 2-1.
Less than two minutes later the Hawks tied the match as Gallpo sent another centering pass, this time to Caitlin Alves, who put it in the back of the net to tie the score at two.
ODU goalkeeper Brianna Alvarado came up big with eight saves while Erin Quinlan made two saves for Hartford.
Old Dominion finishes their three-game road stretch on Friday, Aug. 31 at Radford.
