NORFOLK, VA-- Former ODU righthanded pitcher Ben Tomchick (Virginia Beach, VA.) has signed with the Kansas City Royals and will be pitching for the Burlington Royals in the Appalachian League.
Tomchick finished his four-year career at ODU with a 20-18 record and the school's fourth all-time strikeout leader with 278 behind only Justin Verlander ('04 with 427), Kevin Bearse ('87 with 325) and Dan Hudson ('08 with 295). This season, Tomchick was 3-5 with a 4.61 ERA and ranked fourth in the CAA with 75 strikeouts.
Tomchick was selected CAA Pitcher of the Week in April after tossing a five-hit complete game shutout at Towson. In 2011, Tomchick was selected to the CAA All-Tournament squad after leading ODU to second place in the regular season and in the CAA Championships. He struckout a career high 10 batters against Georgia State in the 2011 CAA tournament. As a freshman, he was named to the CAA All-Rookie squad.
Tomchick graduated with a degree in criminal justice in May.
