Lady Monarchs Qualify for ICSA Nationals Semifinals, ODU Takes Fourth at Admirals Cup

NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion University women's sailing team placed sixth and qualified for the ICSA National Semifinals in May at the MAISA Women's Dinghy Championship on the Elizabeth River in a busy weekend of action on the water for Monarch Sailing.

Plentiful sunshine, warm weather and a solid breeze were in store on Saturday but Sunday proved to be cold, windy and rainy as Georgetown won the event with a score of 60, followed by Navy, St. Mary's College (Md.), Cornell, Hobart and William Smith and ODU.

Sophomore skipper Corina Radtke and junior crew Shannon Wilkins and senior crew Emily Reich combined to take fifth in the A-Division race with 66 points while sophomore skipper Rachel Austin and senior crew Jessica Milligan and Arianna Baker combined for 69 points and a sixth place finish in the B-Division race.

The No. 16 Old Dominion University coed sailing team took fourth place at the Admirals Cup over the weekend in Kings Point, N.Y. with a score of 371. The 19-team event was won by No. 5 College of Charleston followed by No. 4 Stanford, No. 2 Georgetown, No. 16 ODU and Tufts University.

Junior co-captain and skipper Dillon Paiva along with sophomore Chloe Constants and senior Miles Martschink took second in the A-Division race with a score of 116. Senior skipper Gavin Rudolph and sophomore crew Jill Fattibene placed fifth in the B-Division race with a score of 147 while junior Collin Leon raced to a third place finish in the C-Division race. Weather was ideal on Saturday while Sunday proved to have good wind but colder temperatures.

Meanwhile, at the Thompson Trophy race in New London, Conn., Old Dominion took ninth in the 18-team event that had on and off weather and wind issues all weekend. Sophomore skipper Brady Stagg and senior crew Emily Reich took seventh in the A-Division race with a score of 149 while sophomore skipper Scott Hoffmann and sophomore crew Julia Wiesner took 10th in the B-Division race with a score of 160.

ODU is off now until the semifinals of their respective ICSA National Championship Semifinal events begin in May.
