Monarchs Scored Four in Eighth to Complete Comeback Over Marist, 6-3

NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion University baseball scored four runs in the eighth inning to complete a come-from-behind victory over Marist in the second game of a doubleheader Friday at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex. Marist won game one 7-2.

Josh Eldridge started the eighth by reaching on an error while Josh Wright singled to single, Marist pitchers walked four-straight batters. Brandon Shelton laid down a squeeze bunt to add another run for the Monarchs.

Marist got the scoring started in the second inning as Ben Luderer knocked a two-out single to right field to give the Red Foxes a 2-0 lead.

Marist got another run in the top of the third but ODU scored in the bottom half of the inning as Donald Engler singled up the middle for his first collegiate hit and RBI, scoring Brent Frazier who had doubled to start the inning.

ODU cut the deficit to one in the fourth as Chris Baker tripled to start the frame and scored on Josh Tutwiler's RBI double.

That was the way the scoring held until the Monarchs

Brandon Smith pitched three innings of scoreless relief with five strikeouts to earn his second victory of the year. Ben Tomchick pitched six solid innings for ODU, allowing five hits and three runs, striking out seven.

Brett Houseal got the loss for Marist, going seven plus innings giving up seven hits and five runs, four earned.

Marist scored three runs in the second and two more insurance runs in the ninth to pull out a 7-2 win in game one of the doubleheader.

Shawn Sizemore and Brandon Shelton had two hits apiece for ODU.

Eric Helmrich went 3-for-5 with two runs scored while Mark Brennan had a three RBI double to lead the Red Foxes.

The two teams play the finale of their three-game series on Sunday, March 4 at 1 p.m.
