NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion University men's tennis dropped a hard fought 4-3 decision to George Washington Friday evening at the Folkes-Stevens Indoor Tennis Center.
With the loss, ODU falls to 0-3 while George Washington goes to 1-0.
"We came out good in doubles, had a couple of tough things happen in doubles, we were up but didn't quite embrace being ahead," head coach Aljosa Piric said. "I'm happy with the way the guys came out fighting in singles. We're getting better, we're going to keep improving, and were going to be ready to play our next match against Norfolk State."
With the match tied at three, Leonardi Lapentti defeated Can Cetinel in three sets, 6-3, 6-7(7-3), 6-3 to clinch the match for George Washington.
George Washington started out the match winning the doubles point with an 8-4 win at No. 1 and a comeback 9-7 win at No. 3. At No. 3, Carlos Lopez Villa and Fahoum Fahoum held a 6-4 lead over Lanentti and Viktor Svennson, but could not hang onto the lead.
Krzysztof Muzalewski and Wesley Barrett won at No. 2 doubles for the Monarchs, 8-4.
Lopez Villa got ODU started on the right foot at singles with a 6-1, 7-6 victory over Ulrik Thompson.
Francisco Dias won 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 at No. 1 but Alfredo Rodriguez earned a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 4 to tie the overall score at two.
At No. 2, Albert Ochagavia won the first set 6-3, but fell just short in the final two sets, falling 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6).
Barrett tied the overall score one more time at three apice with a 6-3, 6-7(7-3), 7-5 win at No. 5.
