CAA Swimming and Diving Championship Video Recap Day 4
FAIRFAX, Va. -- Junior Arni Arnason (Mosfellsbaer, Iceland) was named the CAA's Men's Most Outstanding Swimmer and a pair of Monarch swimmers gave Old Dominion conference titles on the final day of the 2011 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Swimming & Diving Championships. Freshman Sidni Hoxha (Tirane, Albania) won his second title of the championships claiming the 100 free title, while Arnason brought home his third CAA title in the 200 breast.
The Old Dominion men's team finished in fourth with 533.5 points. The UNC-Wilmington Seahawks claimed their 10th straight CAA title with 702 points. Host George Mason placed second with 617 followed by Delaware in third with 564 points. Following the Monarchs were William & Mary in fifth place (477.5), Drexel in sixth place (250 points), and Towson in seventh place (152 points).
Arnason, who yesterday won his second 100 breast title, added the CAA title for the third straight year in the 200 breast to his impressive resume. The junior Icelandic Olympian clocked in with a time of 1:56.58 for an NCAA "B" cut time. He was just .04 seconds off his own ODU record.
Also in the 200 breast, Jason Haigh (Williamsburg, Va.) swam his way to a fourth place time of 2:03.35.
Hoxha, who on day two of the championships won the 50 free, added another title with the top performance in the 100 free. Swimming to a time of 44.56, he tied for the second fastest ODU time in the record books.
The Monarchs had two additional top eight finishes on the third day of conference championship action. Sophomore Jason Brame (Lynchburg, Va.) took third with a NCAA "B" cut time of 15:35.15. Brame's time was the second fastest time in the Monarch record bookis. Additionally, freshman Dogus Akay (Izmir, Turkey) placed 11th in the 1650 free with his time of 16:08.83.
Senior Mikael Ramkvist (Bjarred, Sweden) also gave the Monarchs a top eight finish taking fourth in the 200 back with a time of 1:50.20.
The 400 free relay team concluded the evening giving the Monarchs its fifth NCAA "B" cut time of the championship. Sidni Hoxha, senior Ryan Peart (Fort Washington, Pa.), Mikael Ramkvist, and Arni Anrason registered a time of 3:01.00, the second fastest time in the Monarch record books.
In diving action, senior David Skorupa (Richmond, Va.) scored 323.50 points to finish fourth on the 3 meter. Also helping add to the point totals were sophomore Dale Tornell (Springfield, Va.) in 10th with a score of 254.50 and sophomore James Kuhn (Alexandria, Va.) in 12th with a score of 239.10.
The Old Dominion women's team finished fifth with 397 points.
Towson won the CAA title for the fourth straight year earning the conference crown with 700 points. James Madison placed second with 607.5 points, followed by UNC-Wilmington in third with 532.5 points and William & Mary in fourth with 408. Following the Lady Monarchs was George Mason in sixth (304 points), Delaware in seventh (258 points), Northeastern in eighth (227), and Drexel rounding out the competition in ninth (143 points).
Junior Erla Haraldsdottir (Njardvik, Iceland) posted her third NCAA "B" cut time of the championships with her performance in the 200 breast. Harladsdottir, a 2008 Icelandic Olympian, swam to a second place time of 2:12.58 for a new Lady Monarch benchmark in the event. She surpasses her previous mark of 2:13.32 set earlier this season.
Kimberley Rashleigh (Sydney, Australia) also gave the ODU women another second place finish. She took second in the 200 back with a NCAA "B" cut time and new ODU Lady Monarch record of 1:59.14. Rashleigh, who is the only Lady Monarch to swim the 200 back in under two minutes, reset her own mark of 1:59.73 Senior April Barrientos (Va. Beach, Va.), the champion in the 100 back, took eighth with her time of 2:04.60.
Another ODU record was set by freshman Malin Ekstrand (Halmstad, Sweden) and the 400 free team. Ekstrand set a new ODU record with her sixth place finish in the 100 free, clocking in at time of 51.24. She resets the mark of 51.29 set by Penny Shelor in 1984. Ekstrand also swam the third leg of the 400 free team that set a new ODU record. Ekstrand joined Erla Haraldsdottir, junior Emma Forbes (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) and junior Maddie Stiles (Fairfax, Va.) in registering a time of 3:25.80 in the event replacing the former record the group set earlier this season.
The Lady Monarchs also had a pair of top eight finishes from sophomores Jessica Hubert (Newport News, Va.) and Danielle Naylor (Switon, England). Hubert took sixth in the 200 fly with a time of 2:02.01. Naylor placed eighth in the 1650 free recording a time of 16:51.67.
Several Monarchs and Lady Monarchs were also in action Friday evening in the consolation finals.
Freshman Elizabeth Huggin (Poquoson, Va.) placed ninth in the 200 back (2:02.71), while on the men's side freshman Andrew Crockett (Toano, Va.) was one of four Monarchs in the consolation finals of the 200 back. Crockett placed ninth (1:50.70), with junior Birkir Jonnson (Keflavik, Iceland) taking 13th (1:52.09), freshman Ryan Telep (Chandler, Ariz.) placing 15th (1:54.04), and junior Bryan Russell (Prince George, Va.) recording a 16th place finish in a time of 1:54.19.
In the 100 free consolation finals, senior Ryan Peart (Fort Washington, Pa.) placed 16th (46.47).
Senior Lauren Fiskus (Yorktown, Va.) took 11th in the 200 breast (2:18.39).
Two Lady Monarchs were in the consolation finals of the 200 fly. Maddie Stiles captured 10th place (2:03.22), while sophomore Ashley Luchsinger (Va. Beach, Va.)took 15th (2:05.82). On the men's side of the 200 fly, Daniel Camozzo (Herndon, Va.) took 12th overall (1:51.77).
